Style, Shopping and Fashion in the Queen City
Charlotte Shop Talk![]() |
09/24/12Beauty Brands Launches "The Studio"I think we can all agree on something—shopping for beauty and skin care can be really tough. Some of us settle for the most expensive products, assuming they’re good because they’re pricey. Some of us buy every product in a skincare line, assuming that’s what a good regimen entails. I’m usually the first to dismissively claim, “I’m just looking” when a sales associate approaches me, but when it comes to hair, makeup, and skin, I welcome actual expertise. I’m a pretty steadfast believer in my personal Pantene-Clinique-Almay trifecta (I live on a budget), but I was willing to put that to the test a few weeks ago, when I toured the new in-store “Studio” concept at my local Beauty Brands spot (Charlotte folks, there... 09/12/12Neiman Marcus' Art of Fashion FeteStyle Night Out isn’t the only Charlotte fashion party in which to partake tomorrow night. We can, of course, count on Neiman Marcus for its annual, posh fall fashion fete. The store has teamed up with the Mint Museum for a night dedicated to fashion and art—and the beautiful overlap that both so seamlessly invite: the Art of Fashion Fete. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and is hosted at Neiman Marcus in SouthPark Mall. 100 percent of the proceeds will benefit the Mint Annual Fund. For those of you who weren't able to snag a seat ticket (those are sold out), there’s complimentary admission for a standing room viewpoint for the runway show (it starts at 7:30). Throughout the night, you’ll enjoy beauty tips from professional reps for the... Read more » Posted at 11:40 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

09/12/12Style Night OutWhile everyone else celebrated Fashion’s Night Out last Thursday, our supremely chic city just so happened to be hosting another engagement—the DNC. But we don’t mind; Effie Loukas et al are giving the Queen City its own red pushpin on the world fashion map. After two years of gracefully following Vogue/New York City and the rest of the world's lead on Fashion’s Night Out (Vogue Editor Anna Wintour’s brainchild, geared at recharging the retail scene in a struggling economy), Loukas (local fashion maven, owner of Lotus Look, and 2010 & 2011 FNO host), JustFab and Heels.com have conspired to create Charlotte’s own night: Style Night Out. Here, local makeup artists, stylists, and shops will collaborate to put on a... Read more » Posted at 11:06 PM | Permalink | Comments: 1 |

09/10/12Spotted: Luna in the PressFashion friends, for the post-DNC letdown of no longer spotting high style celebs, like Oprah at Butter and FLOTUS Obama uptown, I've found a silver lining. Thanks to Luna hitting it big by carrying the goods our favorite famous stylelites love to gorge, we can at least dress like the celebs we can't see in person. Here's who's been spotted sporting Luna lately: Charlize Theron in Citizens of Humanity's Avedeon Slick Skinny Axel Pant Selena Gomez in Bella Dahl's Chambray Top Tiffani Thiessen in DL Nineteen Sixtyone's Angel Ankle Skinny Mariner Pant Eva Longoria in Equipment's The SIgnature Blouse Ashley Tisdale in Vanessa Mooney's Longhorn Necklace... 09/06/12Fashion's Night Out Tonight at BelkIt’s thrilling, and really, amazing to have the DNC here in town this week (!!!), but selfishly, I kind of wish they could have scheduled it for next week. It’s New York Fashion Week in NYC and the rest of the country, but most of Charlotte’s FNO events have been rescheduled for next week so as not to interfere with the DNC. (Next week’s events take place on September 13 and are called “Style’s Night Out,” as any event not hosted tonight can’t be called FNO). But Belk is staying strong and hosting Fashion’s Night Out from SouthPark Mall tonight, so I can at least get out some of this pint up fashion energy. I’ll be DVRing my DNC coverage and will be home in time to see ole Barry take the mic. “Fashion’s... Read more » Posted at 11:11 AM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

09/03/12White after Labor Day?It pains me to say that this warrants a re-post from last year. I remember begging my mom for white Keds for school every year. She'd say, "No, because you can’t wear them after Labor Day, or it’s tacky; it’s not practical." I suspect most of our mothers engrained this point in us. (Side note: today, my mom is approaching 60 and is infinitely more fashionable than I.) For some reason, we still see fiercely stylish people pause, post-Labor Day, and ask a friend if it's okay to wear white shorts on a 100-degree day in September. I thought the question had been resolved, but it hasn't, so I'm putting it to rest (again). Notice the friendly poster to the left. Guess what? We're not kids begging for Keds at Stride Rite anymore;... Read more » Posted at 11:44 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

08/29/12Fall Transistion Sales: NordstromIt's (fall) wardrobe transistion time, guys, which means it's the ideal time to stock up on timeless staples for a pretty penny less than they were and will be next season. As someone who scours fashion for a living, this is the biggest tip I can pass along: think ahead, and save, buy in the moment, and spend. It's the time to buy light-weight transistion blazers, colored denim, last season's blouses, nude shoes and summer cocktail dresses that cleverly masquerade as fall frocks when chosen in the right color palette. Here's why: it's hot here well through October, but it's human nature to be persuaded, style-wise, by the calendar's date. A tank top and shorts feels silly in the fall, even when it's scorching outside, but a... Read more » Posted at 11:12 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

08/27/12Oscar de la Renta Trunk Show at Coplon'sIt may seem like a strange time to be talking about spring 2013, especially when we've just rolled out the fall look books and are finally starting to warm up to the idea of wearing boots and knits, despite the insane heat. But Coplon's at Philiips Place is giving us something to get excited about in our wait for next year's warm weather. On Thursday, August 30, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m., and Friday, August 31, from 10 a.m.-5 p.m., the shop will host an Oscar de la Renta trunk show, showcasing the renowned designer's concepts for spring 2013 and Resort Wear. My favorite takeaway from the Resort collection? Classic combos of black and white with stunning pops of pale pink and royal blue. Is it sad that I'm longing for a riviera... 08/20/12Back to School Bargains at Barnes & NobleFor CMS-ers, the first day of school is exactly one week away, which means it's time to get in gear and get the gear. The nerd in me is jealous, as all through school, I'd basically liken back-to-school shopping with Christmas morning. My mom dreaded taking me because, while my brother and sister would slap any old notebook into the cart and complain that it was cutting into their pool time, I'd spend an hour pouring over the perfect trio of highlighters and searching for the binder I felt best expressed my inner-fashionista. I'll just leave you to imagine the painstaking efforts put into picking out my first day of school outfit. The work was so tedious that, at 25, I can still remember every first day of school outfit from 3rd grade-on.... Read more » Posted at 10:40 PM | Permalink | Comments: 0 |

Victoria Robinette reclaimed her Charlotte roots three years ago, when she returned from journalism school in Chapel Hill. She’s filled her post-college days hot on the Queen City fashion scene, writing and styling for Charlotte Wedding, Home+Garden, Where Charlotte and Charlotte magazine. Now, she’s taken the reins as style editor of Charlotte. She loves sky high wedges and cozy riding boots, pampering her two Yorkies, finishing sentences with “Seinfeld” lines, and putting everything on hold for Tar Heel basketball.
