Style Spotlight: McGowan & McClain Jewelry at Fresh

For me, the past week has been filled with shopping (I know, this job sounds taxing) for our Spring 2012 fashion issue. We'll be making magic for that at the Oakdale Greenhouses tomorrow, so stay tuned for highlights. But in the meantime, I've got to shine the spotlight on a stunning jewelry line I've just had the fortune (and shame because it isn't so new) of discovering: McGowan & McClain. It's the perfect pick for adding a little edge and earth this spring, and it's available for your extreme and immediate purhcase at Fresh.

The line, which uses organic materials and draws inpsiration from nature,...

Score Maria Menounos's Style at the Pink Hanger

Score Maria Menounos's Style at the Pink Hanger

What kind of fashion confidant would I be if I kept things from you, like the fact that you can completely copy Maria Menounos's style (like, buy exactly what she's wearing) shopping right here in Charlotte? Not a very good one. And thankfully for you, I'm just selfless enough not to worry that you'll beat me to the Pink Hanger and steal my size...

If you're a fan of this purdy little purple dress (if you're not, adjust your screen), get over there now, while it's in stock! *It's the Isabel Lu Embellished Sleeve Dress.

Resort Wear 2012

Resort Wear 2012

Although we've had an unusually mild winter so far, I presume most of us still dream of getting away from what little chill there is in the air (hey, it tapped 19 degrees one morning last week) and/or work in the form of a tropical vacay. I suppose the fact that I just returned from the Bahamas yesterday echoes this sentiment, but apparently some of my favorite Charlotte boutiques are with me ... because... they've already rolled out their Resort Wear for 2012. While I'm not ready to start talking about spring fashion just yet, I have to say, I'm loving the vibrant colors, shiny fabrics, and easy-going feel of the pieces we're seeing in these collections. And if it means strolling around your den in early January in...

Bumble and Bumble's New Concen-Straight Pro Smoothing Treatment at Hudson E. Hudson Salon

Semi-daily, we talk about fashion, sales, events, and more fashion—anything to keep you as stylish as possible around this town. But lately, I seem to have forgotten the concept of head-to-toe fashion, leaving out one very important element that finds a place in our every ensemble: hair. I do have an excuse—when it comes to hair, I’m inept at anything but wielding a flat iron until my strands are smoking. I’ve sported my same long, straight high school ‘do since, well, high school (barring one “very adventurous” long bob my freshman year of college).

But recently, my perspective changed. I happened upon Huntersville’s newest salon, Hudson E. Hudson (

Lamshop Featured in Elle Décor (again)!

Back in August, we were so excited to report that Lamshop was featured in the then current issue of Elle Décor! We also vowed to keep our eyes peeled for more of our favorite local lines getting national exposure. This month, we got the buzz that another Lamshop product has hit the Elle Décor pages--this time, in the November issue. Bravo, Lamshop!

For...

Missoni for Target

Missoni for Target

I'm a little late jumping on the bandwagon in posting this, and maybe it's because I'm sufficiently annoyed that a collective Charlotte has already flocked the area Targets and swept the shelves of most of the goods, but the Missoni for Target collection is in town. In case you don't already know, the Missoni fashion house opened its doors in Italy in 1953 and has, since, been the envy of label lovers the world over. If you're kicking yourself for missing the actual "for Target" in-store supply, don't; I hear that by 8:15 a.m. on opening day, September 13 (doors opened at 8 a.m.), most everything was gone. But the good news is that you can still snag a few of those iconic,...

Tricks of the Trade: How to Get Awesome Curls

Tricks of the Trade: How to Get Awesome Curls

Last week I was working on a story for the June issue of Charlotte Magazine in which we asked local notable beauty professionals for their expert advice on how to summer-ize your beauty routine. I am not an expert on many things. I know way more than anyone should about the fictional worlds of "The West Wing" and "How I Met Your Mother," and I have a decent knack for helping people figure out how to dress appropriately for social occasions. But that's about it really.  When it comes to beauty advice, I really don't have anything to offer.

Except this.

Take a look at my picture to the right. What do you notice about it (other than the fact that some kind graphic designer has obviously photo-shopped out my ever-present dark under eye circles)? You...

Product Spotlight: Cane + Austin Glycolic Skin Pads

Product Spotlight: Cane + Austin Glycolic Skin Pads

Okay, first let me say this: I am very skeptical about high-priced skin care products. I find it immensely hard to believe that something you rub on your face could have that big of an impact.  I do, however, believe in facials. Someone blasting open my pores and then filling them with all kind of vitamins and anti-aging substances? Now that I'll buy. When I can afford it. I've only had a few facials in my life (due to the whole "writer's budget" scenario), and I've always loved the way my skin feels and looks in the few days that follow one. But the effect inevitably fades and I can't realistically get a facial once a week and continue to do things like eat and pay my mortgage, so I go back to my drugstore beauty routine.

Recently, I found myself over...
