White after Labor Day?

White after Labor Day?

It pains me to say that this warrants a re-post from last year.

I remember begging my mom for white Keds for school every year. She'd say, "No, because you can’t wear them after Labor Day, or it’s tacky; it’s not practical." I suspect most of our mothers engrained this point in us. (Side note: today, my mom is approaching 60 and is infinitely more fashionable than I.)

For some reason, we still see fiercely stylish people pause, post-Labor Day, and ask a friend if it's okay to wear white shorts on a 100-degree day in September. I thought the question had been resolved, but it hasn't, so I'm putting it to rest (again).

Notice the friendly poster to the left. Guess what? We're not kids begging...

White after Labor Day?

I remember begging my mom for white Keds for school every year. She'd say, "No! You can only wear them for a few weeks, until Labor Day, and then it's tacky." I suspect most of our mothers engrained this point in us. (Side note: today, my mom is approaching 60 and is infinitely more fashionable than I. )

For some reason, in 2011, we still see fiercely stylish people pause, post-Labor Day, and ask a friend if it's okay to wear white shorts on a 100-degree day in September. I thought the question had been resolved, but it hasn't, so I'm putting it to rest, once and for all.

Notice the friendly poster to the left. Guess what? We're not kids begging for Keds at Stride Rite anymore; we're adults! That means we decide what...

Trend On Trial: Formal Rompers

Trend On Trial: Formal Rompers

I was really hoping I wouldn't have to do this.  I thought, surely, rompers will go away after a summer season or two and we won't even have to talk about them in any "real" way.  But, then this happened. It's a J. Crew romper.  In fact, there are three of them.  Must we really, J. Crew? I seriously don't know how to feel about this. I'm flummoxed. I'm befuzzled. I'm also a little afraid I might like the first one. But not because it's a romper. I like it because it looks like a pair of sensible, slightly dressed up navy shorts paired with a ladylike blouse—a look I could totally get behind....

Style On Trial: Platform Sandals vs. Flat Sandals for Spring

Hollie Says:

Just in case you didn't hear the news,  the groundhog didn't see his shadow this morning.  Once spring has sprung there's a noticeable pep in my step and my size eight and a half beauties feel the best when they are high off the ground. While wedges aren't on the list of must haves to some women, they are on mine (so are block heels).

Being  a budget-minded gal, I like to scoop up my sky-high platforms and wedges at consignment shops (like Very Terry, 310 East Blvd.,  Sweet Repeats, 300 East Blvd., and Plato's Closet, 9630 University City Blvd.) , DSW (9535 South Blvd) and Off Broadway Shoes (1848 Galleria Blvd and 2408 South...

It's... it's.... The CLOG!!!

It's... it's.... The CLOG!!!

Just as the Ministry of Magic tried to deny the reappearance of Lord Voldemort, I have been in firm denial about the return of the clog.

I had heard whispers and murmurs that clogs were appearing on runways, but I shut my ears and hummed the theme song to Duck Tails. I saw glimpses of their clunky forms in magazines and looked the other way and focused on the sound my streamlined stilettos make, clicking on the floor.  I simply didn't want to believe it could be true.

But now, it seems I have no choice. Clogs are all around me and I am going...

Trend On Trial: Harem Pants

I feel betrayed. Stella McCartney, Dolce & Gabbana, Jean Paul Gaultier, (and most painfully) L.A.M.B have all let me down tremendously. Why you ask? Well, because they insist on participating in this heinous trend...Harem Pants.

Can someone PLEASE tell me why this is happening? What is this? What horribly tragic thing happened to the rest of her calves, and her knees? Or

Trend on Trial: Shorts

Trend on Trial: Shorts

For the record, I am a skirts and dresses kind of girl. Mostly because skirts and dresses draw minimal attention to the meeting of one's thighs and drape nicely when you cross your legs. These are things that, in my opinion, shorts do not do. So, I've hung back over the last three or four summers, waiting to see if shorts are a passing fad or a pressing need in my closet.  It looks as though it might be the latter. Several seasons later, shorts are still showing up on all the trend reports and runways, though blessedly it seems as though Dear Ol' Bermuda has finally got some company.

This year's Short of the Moment is a shorter, more relaxed short, one that is often seen rolled up or cuffed with a cargo tab. It's a close cousin to the baggy "formal shorts" ...

Trends on Trial: Neiman Marcus Fall Fashion Report

Last night, former Shop Talk cohort, Sarah Crosland, and I had the pleasure of attending a runway show hosted by Ken Downing, the Senior Vice President and Fashion Director for Neiman Marcus. Ken was flirtatiously charming, teasing the models as they strutted, and wearing what was, by far, the skinniest men's suit I have ever laid eyes on.  He gave us his expert take on the looks we should be coveting this fall, and gave us a warm and sunny preview of what to expect in the resort collections in spring of 2010.

"Sequins for day"  As Downing so rightly pointed out, we all have a little magpie inside us that gravitates toward pretty shiny things, and according to him, it is now officially okay to wear sequins in the day time. I am...

Trend on Trial: Open toe ankle boots with tights?!?

Trend on Trial: Open toe ankle boots with tights?!?

As you may have deduced from my incredulous punctuation in the title of this post, I am postively dumbfounded by this image I just stumbled across.  It's like my brain can't even process it all! Ankle boots! White tights! Is that a TOE!? Open toe ankle boots? With footless tights?  Is this some sort of prank?

I seriously cannot begin to fathom that open-toe ankle boots worn with footless textured tights could ever even approach being a "trend", but all of those items are definitely available for sale, and I suppose it was inevitable that someone would have tried to put them together eventually, so I will try to work through this like an adult:

Pros:  Ankle boots have grown on me. The right pair, with the right...

Trend on Trial: Leather Jackets

The Bomber. The Motorcycle. The Scuba. Short, fitted leather outerwear is the hottness this season, and I just can´t quite decide if I am ready to zip one on or not. Work through this with me, won´t you ST´s?

Pros: It...
