East Boulevard Sidewalk Sale

It’s here, it’s here! This weekend is one of my favorites each year in Charlotte: East Boulevard Sidewalk Sale weekend (specifically, Saturday, June 2). It’s the time when the shops down this cute stretch in Dilworth haul last season’s leftovers and this season’s sale items onto the lawn or respective discount racks and tables. It’s when you can get tasty additions from Pour Olive for your summer dinner menus and silky body lotions from Cottage Chic. It’s when you snag cute summer dresses (with price tags that make your eyes dance with delight) from Petal and Sloan, and trendy jewelry from Laura James, among countless other goodies from the big players.

Without further ado, here’s how it’s going... Read more »

Artist Reception & Extended Shopping Hours at Slate Interiors

Artist Reception & Extended Shopping Hours at Slate Interiors

Friday just got more fun. This week, we’ll be saying, “TGIF” to the fact that Slate Interiors will extend its shopping hours as it hosts a reception for June’s featured artist, Sharon Hockfield. Her style is, above all, full of life, and it’s underscored by her subjects—figures, flowers, and landscapes—and her technique—lush, thick strokes.

While you peruse Hockfield’s work, you can pick up pretty knick-knacks, one-of-a-kind antiques, and cool modern pieces for your summer digs. Bonus: fill up on “Food to die for” by Melissa... Read more »

Memorial Day Sales

For those of you staying in Charlotte for Memorial Day, a lovely weekend of shopping awaits you. I'll just cut to the chase and tell you where the big sales are and why they're so big:

Cynthia Vincent Shoe Sale at Fresh

Cynthia Vincent Shoe Sale at Fresh

Best day ever. While out scouting for a shoot today, I found myself drooling over a pair of neon Cynthia Vincent espadrilles on the shelves at Fresh. After lamenting the fact that being a magazine editor and owning Cynthia Vincent espadrilles are mutually exclusive things, the sales associate made my day. Starting tomorrow, she informed me, these shoes and all other Cynthia Vincent stunners (including wedges, sandals, and flats) at Fresh are 30 percent off.

The moral of this story? Don't be surprised if you see this girl rocking those shoes tomorrow--and every day until it's so cold that my toes would fall off if... Read more »

Our Place Sale

05/21/12

Our Place Sale

I'm not sure the word "sale" does this one justice. It's really more of a sale on a sale. This week, at Our Place, everything on sale is marked down 50 percent more. For those of you grabbing your calculators, I'll break it down for ya right here:

  • 75 percent off (blue tag items) are now 82.5 percent off (that's practically free, people).
  • 50 percent off (red tag items) are now 75 percent off.
  • 40 percent off (yellow tag items) are now 70 percent off.

A word to the wise: I would highly suggest wearing your tennis shoes for this one, as a certain style blogger will be in "Hunger Games" mode.

Diamonds at Laura James Jewelry

Diamonds at Laura James Jewelry

Just when we thought Laura James (and her jewelry) did it all, we discovered that, as of this week, she does it all, plus diamonds. But, leave it to James to keep things fresh in terms of the aesthetic. We love the fusion of classic stones and modern shapes. Right now, the East Boulevard boutique's girl's-best friend-haul includes 14K gold pave studs, diamond pendants, and initial necklaces, like these photographed.

And don't forget about Laura James Jewelry's weekly Facebook auction, which starts tomorrow night at 8. If you need a refresher on how to play, here are the Read more »

Style Translation: Sam Francis's "Composition: Yellow and Red"

In our May issue, we hipped you to the Bechtler Museum of Modern Art's mid-century modernism exhibit, which runs now through August 27. In particular, we profiled a 1956 water color and goauche piece ("Composition: Yellow and Red") by Sam Francis, who was experimenting with new uses of color in resolution of an exceedingly monochromatic phase.  Also in the May issue, we offered a style translation of Francis's painting which, if I do say so myself, articulated a marriage of art and fashion... Laura James Mother's Day Sale

Laura James Mother's Day Sale

I learned a really big lesson a few years ago about showing my mom (who sacraficed her stick-skinny shape to bring myself and my twin into this world) true arppreciation on Mother's Day. (There is a point, so stay with me through this little trip down memory lane) It was Mother's Day, 2008, and also my graduation day from UNC. My twin, Beth, had graduated the day before from NC State. Roughly translated, for my mom, the weekend meant: driving from Charlotte to Raleigh and Chapel Hill (and repeatedly back and forth between the two) treating us graduates to a fancy and expensive meal, stroking our egos to the point of no return, showering us with gifts, snapping our pictures, and most importantly, sitting through two really long and really boring commencement... Fresh Cinco de Mayo Sale

05/04/12

Fresh Cinco de Mayo Sale

One thing I love about this city's shops is that they'll find any reason to host a good sale. Golf tournament? Sure. Spring break? Why not? This weekend's occassion is Cinco de Mayo, and it means a fiesta at Fresh Boutique. Today and tomorrow, all accessories will be marked 20% off.

So, what might you snag? Cynthia Vincent wedges and flats, Charlene Kay, Sylvia Benson, and Heather Hawkins jewelry (not to mention, Mollybeads, Lori Snyder, Harper, Gorjana, and E Designs), Koobie bras and Snug camisoles, and Botiker bags.

Plus, it's not Cinco de Mayo without Corona and Sangria, which will be as plentifully stocked as the goods. Well, I'm game.

FashionSOUL Show at Amos' Southend

FashionSOUL Show at Amos' Southend

Thinking margaritas and sombreros for Cinco de Mayo this weekend? I fully support that, but only before or after you've attended FashionSOUL at Amos' Southend  this Saturday for its 3rd annual event, which will raise funds for the Humane Society of Charlotte. Fox News Charlotte's Morgan Fogarty hosts this year's show, which boasts six designers: Cigi Guz of V.Vill, Caroline Cook of FROCK Shop, Tara Davis of FLOW (shout out to all three, whom we've featured on our pages over the past year), Andre Jarred of Styles by Andre, David Watkins of House of ABBEYDALE, and Caleb Clark of Enemy to Fashion.

For an added entertainment bonus, Spiral Queen City, Queen... Read more »
