GO RIGHT NOW - Luxe Home Couture FLEA Sale

Take it from our Char Mag Senior Editor, Blake Miller: this is one sale you don't want to miss out on. She actually got her butt there before even coming in to work so she could beat the lunch time crowds (smart gal). She walked away with a pair of adorable ceramic bird candle holders for less than $15 and is considering going back for more.  In fact, I'm pretty sure our entire office has been plotting an escape over to Luxe on East Blvd. sometime today... so look for us there!

Trend on Trial: Open toe ankle boots with tights?!?

Trend on Trial: Open toe ankle boots with tights?!?

As you may have deduced from my incredulous punctuation in the title of this post, I am postively dumbfounded by this image I just stumbled across.  It's like my brain can't even process it all! Ankle boots! White tights! Is that a TOE!? Open toe ankle boots? With footless tights?  Is this some sort of prank?

I seriously cannot begin to fathom that open-toe ankle boots worn with footless textured tights could ever even approach being a "trend", but all of those items are definitely available for sale, and I suppose it was inevitable that someone would have tried to put them together eventually, so I will try to work through this like an adult:

Pros:  Ankle boots have grown on me. The right pair, with the right... Read more »

What's Happening: Fashion Now Runway Shows at SouthPark

What's Happening: Fashion Now Runway Shows at SouthPark

You have to admit, Charlotte, our mall is one to be proud of. SouthPark has grown from a middling, average mall in the 1980's to a goregous, shiny beacon of fashion and luxury.  Some of you Shop Talkers might not even be aware of this transition, but trust me. I've been shopping at South Park since I was buying shoes at Stride Rite (a.k.a approximately age 6). This weekend, come celebrate all that is awesome about the stores and styles our mall offers with a two-day celebration of fashion!

Friday night  (that's tonight!) is Trends & Friends night, and there will be product demos, free samples and pampering stations all throughout the mall. There will be gift cards and prizes given out every hour (including a $100 Simon Gift Card to use anywhere in... Read more »

The new center for African American Arts & Culture is finally opening its doors in uptown this weekend! For these two days only, you can get in free to their "Open House" to see the center for the first time, attend a book signing, hear live music, see dance and puppetry performances and, of course, explore the inaugural exhibits.

Saturday and Sunday 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. 551 S. Tryon St.

GET HAPPY - Everything Doesn't Suck Party

Don't listen to the news. The whole world isn't heading to the devil's lair in a handbasket made of health care reform and devalued homes. How do I know? Because we can still dance our worries away at parties like this one: entrance is free, drinks are cheap,... Read more »

What's Happening: Bob Ellis to Close Southpark Store

What's Happening: Bob Ellis to Close Southpark Store

Oooof. This is terrible. We thought we'd withstood the worst fashion fatalities that this recession was going to cause our poor, dear Charlotte (R.I.P. Coco Fleur and Miss Priss, among many others), but we had no idea that our despair would have to dip this low.

Bob Ellis, luxury shoe purveyor that has been a part of the Charlotte shopping scene for 11 years, is closing its doors.

Luckily, their Charleston store (on King St.) will remain open, but we will mourn the loss of this excellent store in our midst. The service was always impeccable and the styles were always to-die-for.

You'll be missed, Bob Ellis. May there be many fabulous ladies up in shoe heaven waiting to totter around in your heels.

Guy Style: Mad Men Suits On Sale at Brooks Brothers

Hey dapper dudes, your Don Draper moment has finally arrived.

As a woman, I'd advise you to only copy the The Don's style, and not his questionable relationship with his wife, or his philandering, mmmkay?

Otherwise, this look has the Official Shop Talk Stamp of Approval - if you've got pockets deep enough to purchase this look for yourself (about $1k is what you'll need), then there are sure to be Mad Women in your future.... driven mad by how foxy you'll look in one of these tailored creations.

Trend on Trial: Leather Jackets

The Bomber. The Motorcycle. The Scuba. Short, fitted leather outerwear is the hottness this season, and I just can´t quite decide if I am ready to zip one on or not. Work through this with me, won´t you ST´s?

Weekend Ahead: October 15-18

I just couldn't take another minute of this dreary Charlotte weather, so as you read this, I am in sunny Mexico for a few days of sun and spa pampering. When you are done hurling things at your laptop screen in a jealous rage, you should consider one of these fine weekend activities:

REV YOUR ENGINES - NASCAR Banking 500

Chances are, if you are going to the race, you don´t need to be reminded about it here on this blog. You are already pumped to catch the fall sprint to the championship cup and you´ve been tailgating and camping out since yesterday. So, perhaps this should be more of a warning to those who aren´t attending the race: don´t attempt any impromptu trips to Concord Mills mall this weekend unless that pair... Read more »

Love It: Neiman Marcus' Christmas Book

Hello there Shop Talkers!

Yesterday was my first day on the job as the solo author of this blog, and I blew it. I was home sick and thus didn't have the chance to share any shopping gems with you all. Please forgive me, I promise to make it up to you right... now.

When I arrived back at work today, Sarah had left me a most wonderful gift: the press kit containing the annual Neiman Marcus Christmas Book. Some might find it foolish for them to put out such a pie-in-the-sky, you've-got-to-be-kidding-me collection of gift ideas in a recession year (they do include a selection of items that are $250 and under), but this is why we love Neiman Marcus. Even while their sales are down, they still keep their stores staffed to... Read more »

What's Happening: Jenn Takes Over Shop Talk

What's Happening: Jenn Takes Over Shop Talk

Sarah here:
A love of fashion and a passion for food aren’t typically paired. Fashionistas these days pick at their salads and sip their Perrier while foodies are much more concerned with the texture of a dish than any fancy fabric. But I tend to think that the two areas aren’t all that dissimilar.

They’re both about indulging your senses—whether it’s with soft, flattering cashmere or a creamy crepe stuffed with fresh produce and hard-to-find cheeses. And let me be the first to say, there’s very little I enjoy more than indulging myself.

It’s no wonder then that I’ve long been torn between my love of fashion and my love of food. I like to think I’m following in some pretty famous footsteps. Marie... Read more »

Saving with Style: Anthropologie Bathing Suits

Ok, so finding a new bathing suit probably isn't at the top of your "to do" list right now being that sweater weather is just around the corner and with last night's temperature drop you're thinking more fabric rather than less.

However, one day early next spring when you're eyeing the pool or planning your beachside getaway, you're going to be wishing you had something new and fresh in your bathing... Read more »

Online Finds: J. Crew Heels

Jenn and I work in an office with two other women. For this reason there is much discussion of fashion, style, and "is that a new dress you're wearing today? where did you get it?" just about every day. In fact, I've already listed off the brand of every single thing I'm wearing to my co-workers this morning. (In case you were wondering, it's all Target. In my defense as a style blogger it's Richard Chai for... Read more »

Love It: Long Cardigans

First, let me be clear. I'm not talking about sweater coats (though those are cozy and they do have their place). I am talking about long, skinny, thin, definitely-doesn't-count-as-outerwear, cardigans. In case you haven't noticed, they are cropping up everywhere this Fall, and I, for one, have fallen hard for them.

I love them with mini-skirts and tights, I love them loose... Read more »

Love It: Dries Van Noten Spring 2010

For the most part, Jenn and I keep our envy of style writers who attend international fashion shows to a minimum. After all, on days like today (when Conde Nast shut down three major magazines), we're just glad to have a place that is still paying us to work.

However, we are quite unbearably envious of those lucky few who got to see the Paris Dries Van Noten show last week. The... Read more »

Weekend Ahead: October 2-4

TASTE
Saturday is supposed to be mostly sunny with a high of 79. We're talking perfect breezy fall day (knock on wood). So, just in case you needed another excuse to attend the Great Grapes festival at Symphony Park, there it is. The event includes live music, great food, and the chance to taste hundreds of North Carolina wines. (Although, maybe don't taste hundreds of wines. That will kill you. But... Read more »
