The Blushing Bakeshop Opening Soon

The Blushing Bakeshop Opening Soon

Fact: Women love cupcakes.

It's true guys. Maybe it's because they're small and cute. Or maybe it's because they're sweet and delicious. Or maybe it's some ongoing adoration of Sex and the City and its characters' love for cupcakes. Whatever the case, ladies these days can't seem to get enough of the miniature cakes.

Which is why it's so convenient that Charlotte's newest cupcake bakery, The Blushing Bakeshop, is opening on February 12th, a mere two days before Valentine's Day.  These cupcakes are adorable—probably the most girly ones we've seen—and judging by the flavors, they're also quite tasty. (There's one featuring a vanilla cake with a nutella center topped with stracciatella cream. Yes,... Read more »

New Flying Biscuit on Park Road

New Flying Biscuit on Park Road

City-dwelling lovers of The Flying Biscuit Cafe's peach compote topped organic oatmeal pancakes, black bean "Love Cakes," and, well, biscuits can rejoice. The Atlanta-based chain is opening its newest location soon in Park Road Shopping Center at the corner of Park and Woodlawn.

Previously, the only Charlotte location has been on Rea Road, just south of I-485—which, if you live in town is a bit of a drive for breakfast. (This is not to say that Flying Biscuit is only open for breakfast. The restaurant stays open through dinner and offers dishes like flat-iron steak and shrimp & grits, as well as a great beer selection. But, its claim to fame is its all day breakfast—and its thick, fluffy biscuits.)

Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen Opening Uptown

It's official. Rooster's Wood-Fired Kitchen, the South Park favorite owned by Jim Noble, is opening a second location in uptown Charlotte at One Bank of America Center. (This will be the first restaurant in the center.) Roosters, which is known for using regional ingredients (a dining trend Noble was at the forefront of in Charlotte),  features a la carte southern cuisine with international influences in an upscale environment. The new location, which is under construction currently, is projected to open in the fall of 2010 at 150 North College Street.

In the meantime, if you haven't tried Roosters' tasty pan fried corn or tender spit-fire roasted chicken, you should probably do that. (No point in waiting until fall 2010.) ... Read more »

Eat at Lulu, Help Haiti

Eat at Lulu, Help Haiti

If you've been to Lulu in Plaza Midwood, then you know that you don't really need an excuse to go back. But, if you were looking for one, now is a particularly good time to dine in the cozy French bistro style restaurant. Right now Lulu is donating 50 cents from each customer to the Red Cross for aid in Haiti. Plus, each server is donating 5% of their tips to the same cause.

On a related note, have you had the Back Porch BLT ($8) on Lulu's lunch menu? Because I just did. And you should be very, very envious. It's smoked slab belly bacon, lettuce, pimento cheese, and fried green tomato all piled on buttery texas toast bread.

Lulu serves lunch, dinner, and brunch (on Sundays).  Go—and soon to help Haiti.

Room 18

Room 18, which opened in October, is the newest Asian fusion addition to south Charlotte and after a trip there last weekend, it's apparent why the restaurant has quickly become a local hot spot.

It's owned by the Chens, a family that has owned a variety of Asian restaurants around Charlotte throughout the last decade or so. (Want to learn more about the Chens and their local empire? Check out this story from when they opened Room 18's sister restaurant, Room 112, uptown.)

So back to Room 18.  The restaurant is relatively small with a packed seating area and a U-shaped bar lit with neon green lights. The crowd is a comfortable mix of families, couples, and groups. The... Read more »

Good News Pizza Lovers

Good News Pizza Lovers

Mellow Mushroom is returning to Charlotte.

It's been a long, hard two years since the last Mellow Mushroom closed in the Charlotte area, but fans of the funky pizza joint can rejoice because the new location in Myers Park will be opening in early summer. Not familiar with the restaurant?  It's an eccentric pizza spot with a good beer selection including local brews.  The menu features soups, salads, calzones, hoagies, and of course, pizza. Look for speciality pies like the Funky Q Chicken topped with barbeque chicken, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and bacon.

The new restaurant (which is one of more than 100 Mellow Mushrooms across the country) will be located in the new Read more »

SAS Cupcakes

SAS Cupcakes

It's Monday. I know, I'm sorry too. However, there are things that can make Mondays feel better. Those things are called cupcakes.

This weekend I finally got down to Blakeney to check out SAS Cupcakes, the (relatively) new cupcake shop there selling a variety of the sweet creations in quite possibly the cutest shop front you've ever seen. There's candy lining the wall, colorful cakes in the case, and more shades of pink than I actually realized existed.

You can check out the Web site (sascupcakes.com) to find which cupcakes are there on which days. For example, today you can find Lemon Rasberry (pictured), Bailey's Irish Cream, or White Chocolate pretzel, while tomorrow you can nibble on Cinnamon Toast, Oreo, or Peppermint... Read more »
