Support Global Cooling... at Wet Willie's

Support Global Cooling... at Wet Willie's

Today is going to reach 98 degrees. I’m not talking about that boy band from the late-90s. It’s the forecasted high temperature for today. All week, the temperature is forecasted to flirt around 95 degrees. WTH? Tomorrow is just the first day of June, and summer is still officially three weeks away. When it gets this hot this soon, I can’t take it. I don’t even want to go outside while the sun’s up. We all have our own methods of beating the heat, but today I want to pay tribute to Wet Willie’s and its trademarked slogan that’s just so appropriate right now: Support Global Cooling.

I have to admit, I wasn’t one of those people who was all hyped up when Wet Willie’s opened a little over a year ago at NC Music Factory.... Read more »

Thomas Street Tavern Makes Esquire’s List of Best Bars in America

Thomas Street Tavern Makes Esquire’s List of Best Bars in America

Thomas Street Tavern has made Esquire magazine’s prestigious list of “Best Bars in America 2011.” The Plaza Midwood bar comes in at number 131. At first glance, that might not seem too impressive, but when you consider there are literally tens of thousands of bars to choose from across the country, just making the list is an achievement. Thomas Street Tavern is the only North Carolina bar to make the list this year, and there’s only one from South Carolina: The Windjammer in Isle of Palms ranks 147. Of the 169 bars on the list (not sure how they determined a cutoff point), there is an absurd number from cities like Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, and... Read more »

Party with the ‘Best of the Best’ Tonight

Party with the ‘Best of the Best’ Tonight

Charlotte magazine’s 2011 BOB Awards (Best of the Best) is taking place tonight at Butter NC. You might recall attending this event the past few years at SouthPark Mall, and other locations before that. But to my knowledge, this is the first time the event is taking place at a nightclub. I’d like to think Dusk Till Dawn had some influence on that. But what this really means is it’s gon’ be a party y’all!

The BOB Awards isn’t an actual awards ceremony, but is an event to celebrate the winners of the Best of the Best in Charlotte, from dining and shopping to arts... Read more »

New, Monthly Ladies Night at RE:PUBLIC

New, Monthly Ladies Night at RE:PUBLIC

RE:PUBLIC, the trendy, uptown nightclub that opened four months ago, is launching a new, monthly ladies night. Billed as Une Soirée, or Ode to the Ladies, the party is highlighted by what is said to become a monthly staple: a gifting suite in which the club will give away products from major fashion brands.

The party takes place this Friday night and the gift of choice will be thirty pairs of ladies shoes by Fergie Footwear, the shoe collection by the famed Black Eyed Peas singer. Columnist and media personality Brittney Cason hosts the event (and her crew is an attractive bunch all by themselves).

The event starts at 9:30 p.m., and there will be complimentary champagne for the ladies from 10-11 p.m. On... Read more »

Casino Night with NFL Stars

Casino Night with NFL Stars

Carolina Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis is presenting A Night in Vegas with his NFL friends. But you won’t have to go far because the event is this Friday night (May 13) in Charlotte. The Vegas-themed party is part of a weekend of events Davis’s foundation, the Thomas Davis Defending Dreams Foundation, is holding to raise money to support its youth programs.

The event takes place at Extravaganza Depot, 1610 N. Tryon St., which is a great location for themed parties because the venue specializes in that sort of thing. The night will be divided into two parts: games—blackjack, poker, etc.—from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m., and the after-party from 11... Read more »

Charlotte Checkers Viewing Party and Playoff Rally Tonight

05/10/11

Charlotte Checkers Viewing Party and Playoff Rally Tonight

The Charlotte Checkers are being featured tonight on ESPN’s E:60 and are inviting fans to come watch the TV show with them. E:60 is a weekly, primetime newsmagazine show—think 60 Minutes for sports—and the cable network is telling the story of the Checkers’ relationship with eleven-year-old Zach Bennett, who suffers from neurofibromatosis (NF1), a condition that causes tumors to grow on nerve tissue.

In April, the Checkers announced they’d raised money and purchased a home in Charlotte for Zach, his parents, and sister, Jenna, Randy, and Danielle Bennett. Many of the Checkers players had befriended the Bennett family when the team was located in Albany, New York and played as the Albany River Rats. The Bennett family were season... Read more »

The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte’s Lobby Lounge Is Haven for Socialites

The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte’s Lobby Lounge Is Haven for Socialites

I took a friend out Saturday night to help her celebrate a special occasion. I decided on The Ritz-Carlton Charlotte because I like their dining/bar options and how the choices vary enough that we would certainly find one whose atmosphere we liked.

We started out at Urban Sip, which is on the hotel’s fifteenth floor. Urban Sip opened in December and is lauded for its list of more than ninety wines and thirty-five scotches by the glass. There’s also a great selection of meats and cheeses to pair them with, in addition to the wonderful views you get from the floor-to-ceiling windows (read Read more »

New Uptown Shuttle Caters to Nightlife

New Uptown Shuttle Caters to Nightlife

Dining out, bar-hopping, clubbing, and taking in a show in uptown just got a little easier. The NC Music Factory and Felix Sabates Mercedes-Benz have partnered to offer a new, free uptown Charlotte shuttle service called the Entertainment Express. This 18-passenger shuttle will run every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 2:30 a.m., making stops throughout uptown. This is an option uptown visitors didn't have before, if you compare it to the free Gold Rush shuttle that doesn't run at night.

Even though the press release I received today doesn’t come right out and say it, the shuttle will basically help the NC Music Factory, which is on the... Read more »

About This Blog

Girls just want to have fun. Boys will be boys. You’re an adult now. Sure, you have more responsibilities than ever and your time is increasingly pressed. But it’s imperative that you make time for happy hour. That you check out that new nightclub while it’s still the hot, new thing. Dusk Till Dawn will help you navigate Charlotte’s nightlife scene, telling you where to go and when to go there.

About Jarvis

You may have seen Jarvis Holliday’s byline in Charlotte magazine and other local publications, maybe on a story in which he’s interviewed a prominent official or written about a serious issue. Well, not here. He’s taking the night off because you should as well (and maybe the next morning, too). Club owners and promoters will love him if they’re on their A-game. But if their parties are lame, he’s calling them on it. Look at his face. Do you think he cares who doesn’t like it? Follow him on Twitter @HollidayInk.
