U.S. President vs. America’s Team: DNC Speakers Announced

The Democratic National Convention Committee and the Obama for America Campaign have been jointly rolling out announcements over the last couple of days about which prominent party members will speak at the Democratic National Convention. Yesterday’s announcement that former President Bill Clinton will deliver the nominating speech on Wednesday, September 5 at Time Warner Cable Arena has been big news. Within the Democratic Party, he’s the most charismatic and recognizable figure of at least two generations.

So one would expect tens of millions of people will tune in that Wednesday night to see Clinton speak, which provides a compelling storyline before President Barack Obama speaks the following night at Bank of America Stadium. The convention nights before... Read more »

UndocuBus Coming to Democratic National Convention, Riot Gear on Order, Anniversary of Obama’s Speech

Some quick news items of interest in relation to the Democratic National Convention:

A group of undocumented immigrants are heading to Charlotte in time for the DNC. UndocuBus, also known as the “No Papers, No Fear Ride For Justice,” is a multistate tour to protest what its organizers believe are unfair immigration policies and deportation procedures in this country. According to the organization’s website: “The tour will begin on July 29 in Phoenix, Arizona, following a week of action calling for Sheriff Arpaio to be brought to justice and for the federal government to stop collaborating with Arizona's crisis. We will head through key states, including New Mexico, Colorado, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Georgia, and Tennessee.... Read more »

Two renowned media organizations announced this week their plans to provide daily news coverage during the Republican National Convention in Tampa and the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, in each case partnering with a local newspaper.

Bloomberg LP will publish Bloomberg Insider, a daily magazine to be distributed at both conventions, that “will expand on daily convention coverage, providing a forward look at the 2012 U.S. elections while focusing on the important business and economic issues that define the candidates and their parties,” according to a press release. Ashley Judd to Host Women Vote 2012 Summit in Charlotte this Sunday

Ashley Judd to Host Women Vote 2012 Summit in Charlotte this Sunday

As if the number of campaign ads airing daily on your television isn’t enough of an indication, there are more reminders of just how important of a swing state North Carolina is in this presidential election. Campaign commercials from President Barack Obama and his Republican challenger Mitt Romney often air during the same television breaks. But in other areas where the two are going head to head, Obama’s ground game is far ahead of Romney’s because as Obama’s campaign organizers will tell you, they “never left the state” after he won North Carolina in the 2008 election.

We know that one of the primary reasons the Democrats chose Charlotte to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention is because of how important North Carolina is... Read more »

Special Screening tonight of ‘Carolina Stories’

In March, the Charlotte in 2012 Convention Host Committee began releasing videos each week in a series it calls Carolina Stories. The two-minute videos, now 30 of them, are commissioned by the Host Committee and created by local filmmakers and videographers to showcase why it’s great to live, work, and build relationships in Charlotte and the Carolinas. Videos will continue to be released on up to the start of the Democratic National Convention. And tonight, you can watch a special screening of the first 30 of them.

It’s Food Truck Friday in South End, you know, where food... Read more »

DemList, Eventbrite—Listings and Web Tools Coming Online to Track DNC Events

DemList, Eventbrite—Listings and Web Tools Coming Online to Track DNC Events

I recall a few months ago a Democratic National Convention official saying there could be as many as 1,100 events taking place in Charlotte during the week of the convention. The majority of those events—dinners, rallies, parties, and concerts—won’t be put on by convention officials, but instead by the national and states’ Democratic parties, campaign committees, congressional groups, corporations, media outlets, civic and community organizations, entertainment companies, and more. No one person or entity can possibly keep up with all that will be going on, but many media outlets and websites (including Charlotte magazine) will certainly try. And you—the consumer, the general public—will just need to get in where you fit... Read more »

Christians and Stoners to Converge on Democratic National Convention

Two distinct organizations have announced plans to hold events in Charlotte while the Democratic National Convention is here. One is promoting unity on God’s earth; the other: God’s green earth.

Charlotte714

Charlotte-based Benham Companies, led by twin brothers and former Major League Baseball players David Benham and Jason Benham, has launched Charlotte714. The organization is described as “a group of local area Christians who love Jesus and the city of Charlotte,” and 714 represents Bible passage 2 Chronicles 7:14.
