Pecha Kucha, Creative Hub, and The Echo Foundation Photo Contest Bring You Closer to the DNC
Here are three opportunities presented by Charlotte organizations for you to be a part of the creativity surrounding the Democratic National Convention.
The convention, Pecha Kucha style
Artists, historians, graphic designers, architects, community planners, graduate students, and everyone in between are invited to submit a Pecha Kucha-style presentation to be juried into “Charlotte and the Convention,” an innovative learning opportunity surrounding the Democratic National Convention, hosted by the Knight School of Communication at Queens University of Charlotte. The event will be limited to 10 presentations and take place Friday, August 31, 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Queens. Pecha Kucha (Japanese for chit-chat) is a multiple-presenter presentation style that offers each presenter the opportunity to showcase 20 slides for 20 seconds each. The total presentation time for each presenter is 6 minutes, 40 seconds. The university is looking for presentations about Charlotte, the Democratic National Convention, and the relationship between the two. The deadline for proposals is Friday, June 15. Show your creative side
The Charlotte Chamber is seeking your participation to help tell Charlotte’s story of creativity and innovation through the DNC Creative Hub, part of its Charlotte Creates initiative. More than 80 members of the city’s creative community attended the chamber’s Creative Crowdshare in April. They’re holding the next Creative Crowdshare on Wednesday, June 20, 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at CenterStage @ NoDa (2315 N. Davidson St.) to build on the ideas generated in the previous session and begin the design and development of the DNC Creative Hub, which will be located at Packard Place during the Democratic National Convention. Creative types are invited to give short pitches on their design concepts for the hub, and the crowd will vote on the best designs and then work in self-organized teams to make the initial designs better. The chamber also invites local media, public relations, and marketing professionals to pitch campaign strategies to share Charlotte’s story of creativity and innovation to local and national media, as well as independent journalists. The big picture
The Echo Foundation and The Charlotte Observer are presenting the 2012 Echo International Photojournalism Student Competition with the winning entries to be showcased during the Democratic National Convention. This digital photo contest is open to photojournalism students, ages 16 to 28, from anywhere around the world. Contestants are asked to submit an original photograph, taken by them, that captures the spirit of the competition challenge question(s): “What does democracy or tyranny look like?” or “What does justice or injustice look like?” You’ll also need to include a title for the photograph, a written description of the moment captured and how it reflects what democracy, tyranny, justice, or injustice means to you, the location, and the names of any persons in the photograph. The New York Times photographer Tyler Hicks will judge the contest. The grand prize winner will be invited to Charlotte during the DNC (travel, food, and housing provided), will have the opportunity to photograph for one day alongside renowned photojournalist Bill Eppridge, will attend the gala opening of the photojournalism exhibit, One America, One American: Robert F. Kennedy Through the Lens of Bill Eppridge, attend the 15th Annual Echo Awards Dinner during the convention, and have their winning photograph printed, framed, and hung in The Charlotte Observer Gallery as part of The Echo Foundation photojournalism exhibit.
