Young Democrats and College Democrats of N.C. Holding Convention in Charlotte this Weekend

The Young Democrats and College Democrats of North Carolina are holding their 2012 Convention this weekend, Friday, March 30 through Sunday, April 1, at the Blake Hotel. YDNC officials say they expect hundreds of Dems of all ages from around the state to attend.

Among the party’s prominent leaders scheduled to speak are: Congressman Mel Watt, former Congressman Bob Etheridge, Lieutenant Governor Walter Dalton, Representative Bill Faison, Senator Eric Mansfield, and labor leader Chuck Rocha. Several Democrats running for North Carolina governor, lieutenant governor, and council of state are also scheduled to participate.

UNC Charlotte Engages Students and Community through 49er Democracy Experience

Building on the opportunities being created in Charlotte with the 2012 Democratic National Convention, UNC Charlotte has embarked on a yearlong project it’s dubbed the 49er Democracy Experience. UNCC is teaming with other higher education institutions, businesses, civic leadership, and community partners to present events and programs for its students and Charlotte-area residents.

There are several ways in which Charlotteans hope to make money off the Democratic National Convention. Many involve the pursuit of official DNC contracts leading up to the convention or the expectation of increased business when 35,000 or so visitors arrive the first week in September. Here’s your chance to meet The PPL. You could be a part of The PPL.

You might’ve come across those letters over the past year. The organizers announced the start of their movement a little more than a month after Charlotte was selected to host the 2012 Democratic National Convention. The PPL (pronounced “people”) is derived from the DNC’s mantra of September’s presidential re-nominating event being “The People’s Convention.” The PPL’s Kickoff Party (independent of the DNC) is this Tuesday, March 6, at Packard Place (222 S. As you’ve likely read or heard—or experienced firsthand due to police motorcades blocking off roads—First Lady Michelle Obama made a couple of stops in Charlotte Friday. First she appeared at the CIAA Tournament at Time Warner Cable Arena to promote her Let’s Move! campaign (click here to see photos).
