Music Tuesday April 13 Edition: Todd Snider, Loud & Rich

More good stuff on the horizon this week. Let's get to it.

Thursday, April 15
Todd Snider with Paleface at the Visulite
I discovered Todd Snider in 1994, when, while "finding myself," I was working at a record store in Eastland Mall. The store manager, a funny dude who was a dead ringer for Weird Al Yankovic, announced that I had to hear a song, and he put in a Todd Snider CD. The song was a sendup of the Seattle grunge scene and not, I would come to find out, a completely typical Todd Snider song. Not that there is a typical Todd Snider song. Later, in an interview, he told me that his songwriting hero was John Prine, and I can see that. Snider writes funny songs, sad songs, story songs. He writes fast songs and slow songs. All carry a Texas twang. And he puts on a good show. Paleface, who lives in Concord now after a brief NYC run at stardom several years ago (he was Beck's roommate for a while), opens. He's a good performer worth seeing. Tickets, info.

Monday, April 19
Loud & Rich: Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson at Knight Theater
This quite a double bill. Wainwright and Thompson are two of the alltime best songwriters and performers. Between them, they've probably released more than 40 albums. From all accounts, they mesh extremely well on this tour together, their friendship only deepening the performance experience. A treat for Charlotte. Tickets, info.

About This Blog

Named for the crossroads that marks the dead center of a lively city, this blog contains links to interesting stories about Charlotte, serious discussion of serious news, and commentary on the local media scene. This is your blog, too. Please comment early and often. Also, look for occasional announcements about the magazine or the site.

About Richard

Richard Thurmond is editor and associate publisher of Charlotte magazine and its four sister publications. He started his journalism career as a sportswriter before he realized sportswriting = bad hours and low pay. Oh well. He's been on staff since 1995 and editor since 1999. Also, he thinks he is funnier than he really is, which is helpful information for reading this blog. Got something to say but too chicken to comment? E-mail me.
