You're Welcome, Esquire

It's an old trick. When a national media outlet needs to report on a city with which it is unfamiliar (i.e. any city besides New York), a reporter or producer scopes out the city mag's Best Of list. The September issue of Esquire, which hit my mailbox today, contains a mini-travel story on Charlotte. Mini, as in this is the entire text:

Charlotte Dr. Charles L. Sifford Golf Course at Revolution Park. Good deal. • The Common Market, for a beer. • Jimmy's BBQ, up the road in Lexington. It's worth the hour drive.

In case you're scoring at home, in our May issue, we gave Common Market a BOB Award for Curated Beer Selection. Sifford at Revo Park won for Golf Course Redo (and we touted its affordability). As for Jimmy's BBQ, I have no clue where the Esquire intern got that one.

About This Blog

Named for the crossroads that marks the dead center of a lively city, this blog contains links to interesting stories about Charlotte, serious discussion of serious news, and commentary on the local media scene. This is your blog, too. Please comment early and often. Also, look for occasional announcements about the magazine or the site.

About Richard

Richard Thurmond is editor and associate publisher of Charlotte magazine and its four sister publications. He started his journalism career as a sportswriter before he realized sportswriting = bad hours and low pay. Oh well. He's been on staff since 1995 and editor since 1999. Also, he thinks he is funnier than he really is, which is helpful information for reading this blog. Got something to say but too chicken to comment? E-mail me.
