Jeffrey Leardini Is Back in the News

You may have read some of the coverage of Jeffrey Leardini, the former teacher to whom a jury recently awarded $1.1 million plus reimbursement for legal fees in his lawsuit against Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools. Leardini resigned from CMS six years ago after a CMS official confronted him on allegations of "improper touching" made by a few of his students. Leardini has maintained his innocence, that he felt coerced into resigning, and that the incident ruined his teaching career. (Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police investigated the allegations and filed charges, but Leardini was Read more »

This Weak in Charlotte: Muzak Man, Coydogs, and Charles Johnson Gets Stuck in an Airport

I like elevators insomuch as I use them, in tall buildings, as an alternative to the stairs. Let’s say I had an appointment on the 40th floor of the Bank of America Corporate Center. Would I walk up to it? No. I would not. Elevator? Don’t mind if I do.

That’s me. And then there’s this guy. He lives in Columbia, South Carolina. He has a bit of an elevator fetish. I found him this week, when he uploaded a 3½ minute YouTube video of himself riding the elevator at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte. He doesn’t say much, except for at the 2:43 mark, when he remarks, “These are Otis touch-sensitive... Read more »

If Jeremy Lin Played for the Charlotte Bobcats, There Would Be No Such Thing as Linsanity

I'm a big fan of basketball--yes, I even like the NBA--and I like underdog stories as much as the next person. So of course I've been caught up in the tale of Jeremy Lin. In case you get all of your news from The Apprentice and Auto Trader, Jeremy Lin is the out-of-nowhere starting and starring point guard for the New York Knicks. He's Taiwanese-American, played at Harvard, was cut from two NBA teams and on the verge of being dropped from the Knicks when the team's coach, out of desperation, put Lin in. That was two or so weeks ago, and since then, Lin's been the NBA's leading scorer and... Read more »

This Week in Charlotte Inanity: Laptop Linanity, Dan Murrey Smokes His Own Pork, and More

Note: Starting today, on most Fridays, I'll be turning Trade & Tryon over to the inimitable Jeremy Markovich for his installment of This Week in Charlotte Inanity.

Perhaps you’ve heard of Tommy Jordan and his daughter. They’re from Albemarle. She complained about her chores on Facebook. He went Pulp Fiction on her laptop, shooting it eight times with his handgun. Then he posted the video online (Note: There are a few four-letter words in the above video). This is a form of punishment condoned only by Dr. Phil and,... Read more »

About This Blog

Named for the crossroads that marks the dead center of a lively city, this blog contains links to interesting stories about Charlotte, serious discussion of serious news, and commentary on the local media scene. This is your blog, too. Please comment early and often. Also, look for occasional announcements about the magazine or the site.

About Richard

Richard Thurmond is editor and associate publisher of Charlotte magazine and its four sister publications. He started his journalism career as a sportswriter before he realized sportswriting = bad hours and low pay. Oh well. He's been on staff since 1995 and editor since 1999. Also, he thinks he is funnier than he really is, which is helpful information for reading this blog. Got something to say but too chicken to comment? E-mail me.
