Off to the Races

While the most popular races in this area run on horsepower and take place on the north side of town, there's one day of races that features the real deal. Whether you’re an avid equine lover or a rabid people-watcher, the thirteenth running of the Queen's Cup Steeplechase is the place to be.

Billed as "a grand lawn party where the horses are invited," the all-day, rain-or-shine event takes place April 26 on 260 acres known as Brooklandwood in Mineral Springs. Guests donning polo shirts and sun dresses are transplanted to another era, and many participate in hat contests worthy of Churchill Downs. More than 15,000 people attended last year. Celebrities such as Princess Anne, daughter of Queen Elizabeth II, and Asheville resident and actress Andie MacDowell have attended prior runnings.
