Smallwood Reynolds did better with this project, which, like the Hearst Tower, was developed by Bank of America. Looking like stacks of clear glass cubes, the hotel is more frankly modernist, and it seems light and airy.
The designers took their cue from an adjacent building, 1 Bank of America Center. Now under construction, it comes from the Charlotte office of Perkins + Will, a firm with a strong modernist tradition. Angular and curved at one end, the BofA building will be environmentally friendly, with an enclosed winter garden between it and the hotel.
