By most accounts, Charlotte Memorial was a hospital to be avoided in 1981, whether you were sick, a health-care professional, or a vendor looking for payment. Harry Nurkin was hired to fix it.
Nurkin left last fall. Under his watch, the former Charlotte Memorial became Carolinas Healthcare System, a network of hospitals and other healthcare facilities that is the fourth-largest in the country, with 27,000 employees in two states and a budget of $2.6 billion.
Along the way, Charlotte has earned a reputation as a hotbed for medical talent, quite an accomplishment for a city without a medical school. And health care has become a major local industry, an important diversification for a city built first on textiles, then banking.
