Description

Many diehard opera fans think Puccini’s Madama Butterfly has been done to death. But there’s a reason it’s one of the most enduring operas: its story is pretty easy to follow. Here goes: A former geisha enters into an arranged marriage with an American naval lieutenant. He leaves Japan. She has his child. He marries someone else, returns to Japan, and (spoiler alert!) Madama Butterfly is so distraught, she falls on her sword. This was the opera Glenn Close’s crazy character was obsessed with in Fatal Attraction.
