Book Review: The Great Smoky Mountains by Carl Heilman II

Photographs from a year in the Smokies

THOSE OF US fortunate enough to live within a short drive of the Great Smoky Mountains and the Blue Ridge mountains and parkway know the way their beauty can transfix visitors. But even the most seasoned travelers will gasp when they see the images in The Great Smoky Mountains, a 192-page book by veteran photographer Carl Heilman II. The volume, published this month by Welcome Books, a Rizzoli imprint, includes shots from places many North Carolinians hold dear: Biltmore, Mount Mitchell, the swinging bridge. Try to make it through the entire book without hearing the mountains call.
