Room We Love: A Secret Hideaway in Dilworth

Built in 2016 by Ram Design Build, this 6,000-square-foot craftsman-style home in Dilworth has plenty of space for a growing family. The homeowners wanted a room where “the kids can be wide open and have fun,” says designer Hadley Quisenberry of West Trade Interiors, which she owns with her mother, Lisa Britt. The design firm worked with Ram to turn the crawl space adjacent to the playroom into a hideaway for the family’s three young children.

Room Within a Room
A basement playroom for kids keeps noise and clutter out of the home’s common areas, but this one has a secret—a smaller space hidden in the rear wall. With an entrance just big enough for a child to crawl through, this room gives off a “kids-only” vibe.

Textural Elements
The homeowners love a monochromatic look. To offset the black-and-white tones and add more visual interest to the playroom, the designers incorporated a mix of textures. They covered the crawl space’s facade with cedar shingles and framed the door and roof with the same crown molding that runs through the rest of the house. The custom-bound carpet from Charlotte-based Hall’s Flooring adds a soft element.

Playful Color
The floors and walls are neutral, but colorful toys and a red swinging chair add vibrancy. The three children track their growth with designated, wall-mounted rulers.
