A Sign that Charlotte’s Economy Is…

...OK. With all news about foreclosures, suburban slums, and the doom and gloom coming from BofA and Wachovia lately, it's easy to think that Charlotte's economy is in serious trouble. Granted, there are some troubling signs, the aforementioned among them. (One Wachovian I talked to recently told me that another round of cuts was scheduled for yesterday, and that pretty much everyone who works in investment banking is sitting on their hands, with not much to do, waiting for the axe to fall.) But here's a small piece of good news...

Over at the new Home Depot Design Center in Midtown, they have more business than they can handle. Word is, they hired double the usual number of designers. A typical designer carries a project load of no more twelve, but even with the extra staff, many of them are carrying double that. (Designers work with clients on renovation projects, such as bathroom and kitchen redos.) That tells me that Charlotte's economy is still going pretty strong.
