As the United Way Turns

So, a few weeks after the mess hits the fan when the media finds out that United Way CEO Gloria Pace King was paid $1.2 million in salary, bonus, and retirement benes last year, the board has removed King and replaced her with community stalwart Mac Everett. But King has retained Bill Diehl as her attorney, so this isn't over. Probably not the ideal way to kick off the annual campaign.

It's clear that there is a lot of stuff going on behind the scenes that we may never know. Why did the board supposedly pass the special retirement package eight years ago, but never fund it? Why did it decide to start funding it--in a terrible economic environment--to the tune of $800K? Why did King not once give a public statement on the matter? And why is she now out the door? There's a lot more to this story than is being reported.
