Now Open: Inside the Ivey’s Hotel

Check into an uptown icon

STARTING IN the mid-1920s, Charlotteans shopped at Ivey’s department store uptown, known for its upscale selections and a large chandelier that hung near the entrance. Nearly 30 years after Ivey’s closed, the North Tryon Street building remains elegant. Chandeliers still hang and the inside is still luxurious, but the spot is now designed for sleeping instead of shopping.  

The Ivey’s Hotel, a 42-room boutique property, blends Charlotte’s contemporary uptown feel with antique Parisian influences, from floors made of 400-year-old reclaimed French winery wood to handmade art in every room. 

No two rooms are the same. Guests can choose from purple, teal, and rustic yellow suites or rooms, some of which overlook the busy Charlotte streets. All of the rooms have individualized decorations, pulling in a familiar theme of clocks and European styles, as well as Dean & DeLuca snack bars, Sony 4K flat screen TVs, and mini bars.   

The Ivey’s Hotel is the third of its kind for owner The MRK Hotel Collection. The other locations are in Asheville and Miami, but aside from the consistency in hotel toiletries, you wouldn’t know they were affiliated with one another.

“This is a collection of hotels that have some similarities, but each is incredibly different and unique,” says Janal Montagna, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing. “There should be no questioning. We want you to wake up and know you’re in Charlotte.” —Leah Komada
