Observer and N&O Collaborating More

Back in May, I wrote a story about how The Charlotte Observer and the Raleigh News and Observer, once cutthroat competitors, were going to have to learn to work together now that there were owned by the same company (that would be McClatchy, whose stock has been hammered since buying Knight Ridder). The story contained this memorable quote from former Observer editor Walker Lundy: “My hunch is it’ll be a bit of a challenge to get the two staffs to work smoothly together. It’s a little bit like porcupines mating.”

According to the N&O's ombudsman (a position the Observer does not have), that is starting to happen, kinda. The papers are running more of each other's stories, which requires collaboration to keep out of each other's way. Look for more joint bylined articles in the future. —R.T.
