October rocks the restaurant scene

From wine and beer dinners to block parties and even a pop-up restaurant, October is a promising month for foodies

Break out the stretchy pants, because there's a lot to love about the city's restaurant scene this month. Here's a sampling:

Oct. 6: Taste of Freemore. This neighborhood block party will feature music by The Blue Dogs, food from West Side restaurants (including Savor Cafe, Pinky's Westside Grill, The Burger Company, Picante Mexican Grill, and more), plus beer trucks from Four Friends Brewery and Birdsong Brewing Co. Admission is free, but if you want food and drinks, make sure you bring cash. You can also bring donations for local nonprofit organizations: pencils for Classroom Central and clothing and computer equipment for Goodwill. 4 to 8 p.m., 1500 W. Morehead St. (in The Burger Company parking lot)

Oct. 11, 19, 25: Coastal wine dinners. Coastal Kitchen & Bar has three wine dinners planned this month with food and wine pairings from Chef Clark Wade and Certified Wine Sommelier Kristofer Carlson. Wines from Barrel 27 Wine Company will be featured Oct. 11; Falcor Winery on Oct. 19; and Justin Vineyards & Winery on Oct. 25. $50 per person, reservations suggested. Oct. 16: Harvey's Signature Beer Dinner. This four-course meal at Harvey's Bar & Grill in Cornelius will include beer pairings from Raleigh-based Lonerider Brewery. Tickets are $25, reservations are required. 19707 Liverpool Pkwy., Cornelius. 704-892-1001.

Oct. 16: Fern's one-year anniversary. The veggie restaurant is celebrating with drinks, food, and live music from 6 to 9 p.m. $20. 704-377-1825.

Oct. 29: Canvas and Cuisine. The Market Kitchen's latest pop-up restaurant event is inspired by the Bechtler's Giacometti: Memory and Presence exhibit. The museum will host, and the dinner will include a four-course menu, with dishes that focus on subject, color, technique, and texture. 7 p.m. Tickets are $80 per person. 704-353-9200, bechtler.org.
