Even though she wasn’t hungry, Jamey McCombs was glad she took Chris Underwood’s advice and opened her fortune cookie; inside she found a surprise proposal from him. The Charlotte-based couple went right to work with the wedding planning, including finding the venue—Pine Island Country Club—and a place for their out-of-town guests to stay, Holiday Inn Charlotte Center City. On the big day, the bride walked down the staircase of Pine Island Country Club and outside to a tent to meet her groom. There, in a one-shoulder Maggie Sottero gown, before ninety-five guests, the couple exchanged personal vows. Guests then mingled indoors among an open bar and passed appetizers before the reception in the ballroom, where turquoise and yellow were central colors in the décor as well as the groom’s cake—a nod to the couple’s alma mater, West Virginia University. The rest of the night was spent dancing to tunes mixed up by Charlotte DJ Company. And as a fitting favor, each guest left with a Chinese takeout box filled with fortune cookies.
