Runway Rundown

Charleston Fashion Week Bridal Coverage: LWD Couture

A seasoned vet of the shows in New York but newbie to Charleston, I wasn't quite sure what to expect as I teetered the cobblestone streets in stilettos toward the downtown courtyard of the Holy City. Well, combine impeccable designs and the usual heightened spirit of dress (in spite of weather) with the laid-back ease of the South and a picturesque locale, and you've got Charleston Fashion Week. A week of mingling with emerging ready-to-wear talent, celebrating 125 years with Belk in their fashion-filled style tent, and chatting with the lovely Callie Tein in her quaint downtown shop were all just fashionable details leading up to the main event: Come Saturday, the Marion Square tent was transformed into an elaborate wedding soirée, complete with canapés, cocktails, whimsical floral arrangements and well-stocked swag bags filled with discounts and goodies from all the local vendors. Despite a downpour which quickly ensued, excitement for the bridal masterpieces to come could hardly be contained.

First up, one-off and bespoke designer Liz White of LWD Couture. Only seven years in the making, this Ashville-based label's designer boasts a track record that includes dressing Colin Firth's wife Livia at the 2011 Golden Globes, a Smithsonian debut and a London Fashion Week showing. Needless to say her dresses didn't disappoint. An equal mix of bridesmaid and bridal gowns, White's palette of muted metallics ran the gamut. Old Hollywood glamour dominated this classic film-inspired collection from a show-stopping gold number with a draped beaded back to a tiered lace gown that could have easily been plucked from Daisy Buchanan's armoire. Breezy chiffon confections floated airily down the runway, billowing with each step, and black silk was given a dose of gothic romance with a sheer overlay bodice and intricate floral beading. Though extravagant in trimmings, subdued hues and timeless silhouettes kept this elegant collection accessible for a bevy of bridal personalities.
