There was a time when the Avett Brothers, Seth and Scott, played on the street for tips. More than ten years ago they started improvising in acoustic jam sessions with friends in Greenville. This month, after a long journey through the grass roots of the music industry, they're touring with Dave Matthews Band. But even now that they've found fame, the native North Carolinians haven't sacrificed their originality. The Avetts and standup bassist Bob Crawford make up the permanent members of a band with no genre—blending rock, old-time country, bluegrass, folk, ragtime, and anything else that agrees with their honest sound.
