This Is Panther Town!

Yesterday I attended the Charlotte Touchdown Club’s Speaker Series Luncheon. The organization brings in a big name from the football world monthly. The speaker yesterday was Franco Harris, the Hall of Fame running back who won four Super Bowl titles with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

I don’t know how the Touchdown Club selects its speakers but Harris was an obvious good choice. As most of you are aware, there are thousands of Steelers fans living in Charlotte. Why? I don’t know. Please feel free to clue me in.

When Harris was introduced and made his way to the podium, it was to a standing ovation. Some guy even waved his gold Steelers towel in the air. This is a banquet for crying out loud. Man. Are Panthers fans that fanatic? Will we ever be?

Harris told some good stories mixed with funny jokes, making fun of Terry Bradshaw not being able to spell or count, and portraying Mean Joe Greene as always being mean.

The ballroom at The Westin, where this event was held, was packed. The host said it was the club’s largest crowd ever for a luncheon. I’m sure the couple hundred Steelers fan there contributed to the increase. The Panthers were well represented, too. Former players like Steve Beuerlein were there. As was team owner Jerry Richardson. I passed Richardson in the lobby after the event was over. I’d seen him before but never that up close. He’s a giant. He must be standing on his money. You know, with Hugh McColl, he just bought the Bojangles’ franchise, right? And that makes perfectly good sense. Because this is Charlotte, North Carolina. Home of the Carolina Panthers and Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ’n Biscuits. No matter how many Pittsburgh fans infiltrate our city.
