Weekend Ahead: January 9-11
GO EXOTIC
Orchids, hor d’oeuvres, wine, and cigars. This sounds like the kind of party we’ll have to be on our best behavior for. The Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden is celebrating the first anniversary of its orchid conservatory with an elegant evening among the rare tropical flowers. Sure, it’s in Belmont, but it’s also an excuse to dress up, sip wine, and stop to smell the flowers. 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Entry is $50 and reservations are required (704.829.1252).
LOVE (OR LUV)
Friday night Power 98’s Consuella is hosting the “I Luv the QC” party at Kiss Lounge. And since over at Charlotte magazine we just came up with 51 reasons we think you should love this city, we can’t think of a better time to show some love. Plus, Grammy nominee Calvin Richardson will be there; you have to love that. Doors open at 10 p.m. and there’s no cover until 11 p.m. www.kisscharlotte.com
WATCH
The Wu-Tang Clan is coming to Amos’ Southend on Sunday night. This New York City-based group has been rapping since the early ’90s. As in, they’ve been doing hip hop long before it went mainstream. And they’re still one of the most successful hip hop groups of all time. Doors open at 9 p.m. and tickets are $40 in advance and $45 at the door. www.amossouthend.com
CHEER
What’s that? You hadn’t heard the Panthers are playing the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday? Well, may we suggest moving out from under that rock, donning your blue and black, and heading out to cheer on the hometown team. By now getting a ticket might be hard impossible, but there are plenty of places all over the city to check out the game. Our suggestions? BlackFinn Saloon at Epicentre, the Pantherfanz Tailgate Party on South Cedar Street, Blue Restaurant in uptown, or NIX Burger & Brews.
CHEER (MORE)
Turns out the Panthers aren’t the only sports team in town. This weekend there are enough games going on to satisfy any sports enthusiast. The Charlotte Checkers go up against the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night at Time Warn Cable Arena (www.gocheckers.com). Then, on Saturday, Charlotte 49ers Men’s Basketball takes on Tulsa at Halton Arena at UNC Charlotte (www.charlotte49ers.com). Plus, check out your favorite wrestlers at Cricket Arena on Sunday night (www.cricketarenacharlotte.com).
