Weekend Ahead: June 12-14

PIG OUT – Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest
What would summer be without people shoving their faces full of juicy hot dogs? A bummer, that’s what. Concord Mills mall hosts its third annual contest in the food court. There are separate competitions for adults and kids, so you don’t have to worry about getting schooled by a third grader with a revved up metabolism.
Saturday, June 13, 11 am – 2 pm.
DEMAND AN ENCORE – The Fray with Jack’s Mannequin
Okay, “demand” might be overselling it a bit. We all know they are going to do an encore. Is there honestly a single artist out there today who DOESN’T do the “fake finish” and then stay off stage long enough to chug a Deer Park mini and then come back out for the big finale? The jig is up, folks. Why make us stand there like idiots, clapping and screaming like we are trying to make a fairy come back to life in Peter Pan? Why not just play all your good songs and then end the concert like a man! Sheesh! Anyway, The Fray is playing. Jack’s Mannequin is opening. You get the gist. The coolest part is that the show has been moved from the original venue (Verizon Wireless Ampitheatre) to the brand new Ampitheatre at the NC Music Factory.
Saturday, June 13. Tickets available at www.livenation.com
HANG WITH THE BARD – Shakespeare on The Green – Twelfth Night
If you haven’t copped a squat on The Green uptown to watch the Collaborative Arts Theatre perform Shakespeare al fresco, then this is your last weekend to catch this classic play out in the open. Bring a blanket and snacks, and come early for a free acting workshop, directed by the lead actress in the show. See Shakespeare the way it was meant to be seen – sitting on the hard ground with limited access to restrooms – just like it was back in the 16th century.
Saturday, June 13. Show at 8 pm.
Sunday, June 14. Workshop at 5 pm. Show at 6:30 pm.
RELAX BY THE RAPIDS – Summer Saturdays Concert Series at U.S. Whitewater Center
If you still haven’t made it out to the Whitewater Center, well then we have no idea what you are waiting for, crazy person! Why not go this Saturday and listen to live acoustic covers played by Greg Lilley while you sip on a cool brew on the patio of the River’s Edge Bar & Grill that over looks the rushing rapids of the man-made river? Great excuse to get yourself out there and experience all that this facility has to offer. Our suggestion – go before happy hour and spend an hour on one of the hiking trails. Cold beer tastes so much better when you’ve worked for it.
