News, notes, and gossip about the restaurant scene

Moving South

Two Charlotte restaurants are adding new locations south of the city. Dilworth’s favorite burger joint, Big Daddy’s Burger Bar, is setting up shop in Ballantyne Commons East, and uptown eatery Cosmos Café recently opened a second location at the Village at Robinson Farm (8420 Rea Rd., 704-372-3553).

New in Town

Rita’s Water Ice, the Philadelphia-based chain known for its tasty Italian ice and frozen custard, opened in Galleria Commons (1605 Galleria Blvd., 704-847-4827). Two more locations at Ayrsley Town Center and Ardrey Kell are slated to open soon.

Switching Places

Tanner’s Snack Bar, which used to be on Old Pineville Road, has reopened on South Boulevard as Tanner’s Snack Bar & Maryland Fried Chicken (3401-C South Blvd., 704-679-9900). Now, in addition to favorite summer foods such as burgers, hot dogs, and hot-shelled peanuts, you can also find Maryland-style fried chicken (pressure-fried with lots of seasoning) and fresh fruit drinks. Harper’s restaurant group has opened the new Harper’s Grill (120-100 W. Trade St., 704-372-7792) in the uptown space that Arpa, another of the group’s restaurants, previously occupied. The grill offers many of the same American-style dishes from the Harper’s Restaurant menu, including Betty’s Pimento Cheese Burger, grilled chicken salad, and chicken tenders.

New Lodging

J. D. Duncan and Chef Blake Hartwick, of Bonterra and Las Ramblas fame, are trying something new with their latest venture, a sports bar in south Charlotte. The Lodge (7725 Colony Rd., 704-554-5226), open now in Colony Place, serves fairly typical bar food with a few fancy touches, such as bison, venison, and tuna burgers in addition to regular and veggie varieties.
