After announcing plans for the restaurant this past summer, Kindred will open its doors in Davidson on Feb. 19 for dinner starting at 5 p.m. Behind the restaurant is husband-and-wife team Chef Joe Kindred, formerly the executive chef at Roosters in uptown, and Katy Kindred, a sommelier who also worked with Jim Noble, owner of Roosters, and his restaurant group.

The pair chose a 1914 building that once housed Davidson College’s book store, the Tom Clark Museum, and a town pharmacy as the home for their first restaurant. They've spent the last several months updating the three-story Main Street brick structure, putting the kitchen and a chef’s table on the basement level, a bar and table seating for 20 on the ground floor, and a dining room on the top level that seats 60. A patio will hold another 65 guests in warmer weather.

Kindred’s menu will change with the seasons, and local farms and forager Alan Muskat will help supply the restaurant. A wide range of cuisines and inspirations make up Kindred's menu. Examples of menu items include tagliolini with venison, guanciale, cocoa, and chili en adobo; bucatini with blue crab, salt cured flounder, tarragon, and cream; and scallops with brown butter, dashi, and sunchoke. See the full menu as of publication at the bottom of this post.

Pastry chef Stephanie Detweiler, most recently of Millstone Bake House and Provisions, will head up the dessert menu. The bar will be manned by Kenny Hanlon and Blake Pope, serving cocktails like the Hold Your Horses with gin, manzanilla, muscadine, lemon and the Fashioned Bird, made of mezcal, Calabrian chile, bitters, and scorched herb. Hanlon comes from Comstock Saloon in San Francisco, while Pope worked most recently at Soul Gastrolounge.

Joe Kindred was named our 2013 Chef of the Year, so we're expecting great things from this restaurant. Read that story from our archives here.
