Sugar Magnolia

Sugar Magnolia shows that a restaurant doesn't have to pile its plates with unpronounceable ingredients to be good. This is simple, hearty, and outstanding Low Country cuisine. Chef Cody Stewart pays homage to the classics, like a fantastic shrimp and grits and she crab soup, with first-rate ingredients. And he puts his own spin on dishes like the Maple Leaf Farms Duck Breast, which is pan roasted in a delectable Clementine and Port wine sauce and served with collard greens.

Sugar Magnolia on the Cheap
Offered six days a week (it's closed on Sunday), the $19.99 Chef's Special Dinner changes weekly and includes an appetizer or salad (fried green tomatoes are a favorite), entrée (choices have included a braised pork shoulder with collard greens), or dessert (try the bread pudding). Make a weekday trip for more bang for your buck: there are half-price wines by the glass on Wednesdays and Thursdays, which also feature $5 martinis.
