The Flying Biscuit Café

Short takes on new, newish, and notable restaurants

About fifteen years ago on one of those sticky days that give Hotlanta its nickname, I ate lunch at the original Flying Biscuit Café. That biscuit tasted like it was straight from my grandma's harvest-gold-colored oven. The restaurant's new Stonecrest location serves those biscuits and more, including impressive vegetarian and vegan options (the Vegan BBQ Burrito includes barbecue tofu, collard greens, and mushrooms). Don't let its odd strip-mall location put you off; the servers treat you like kin and the breakfast-all-day options put the Cracker Barrel to shame. Highlights: the creamy grits, Love Cakes (black-bean patties with tomatillo sauce), and Coca-Cola Glazed Salmon.

The Flying Biscuit Café, 7930 Rea Rd., in Stonecrest (704-295-4440) $, BF, L, D. Open daily.
