4 Local Plant Sales this Weekend

Get out and make your purchases

At many of our local gardens, including here at Daniel Stowe, volunteers do much of the work to prepare for plant sales.

This weekend offers plenty of opportunities to purchase your plants for the season. Natives, tropicals, herbs, vegetables—you should be able to find whatever you're after. The sales are spread out geographically, too, from the heart of Charlotte to surrounding areas in Belmont, Monroe, and Lake Norman. And the best part: When you spend money at these sales, you help out a local organization or garden site.

We highlighted the Wing Haven Plant Sale in our Monday blog post. If you haven't been yet, get more information here. Saturday is your last chance to take advantage of this large and varied inventory compiled by garden volunteers.

Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden in Belmont has a month-long Spring Plant Sale that takes place every weekend in April. The sale includes some hard-to-find varieties, garden-grown plants, and garden accessories. Daniel Stowe staff members are available to answer customers' questions. This weekend, the garden highlights Japanese maples and tropical plants from Charlotte's Oakdale Greenhouses. On Sunday, Dr. Larry Mellichamp, director of UNC-Charlotte's Botanical Gardens will discuss his book Native Plants of the Southeast. (Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden, 6500 South New Hope Road, Belmont, NC 28012)

In Monroe, the Extension Master Gardeners of Union County will put on their Spring Plant Sale on Saturday morning. You have three hours, 9 a.m. to noon, to shop. The selection includes vegetables, perennials, house plants, annuals, container trees, and shrubs. Master Gardeners are always knowledgeable about how to care for your new plants, too. (Union County Agricultural Center Greenhouse, 3230 Presson Road, Monroe, NC 28112)

The Lake Norman Garden Club will also hold its annual plant sale on Saturday. It takes place at Rehobeth United Methodist Church from 8 a.m. until noon. The sale offers plants from members' gardens and a selection from Setzer's Greenhouse. Home-baked treats will also be available.
