Beloved Burger Shop Brooks’ Property Listed for Sale
Shooting death of co-founder was nearly four years ago

One of Charlotte’s most revered burger joints, Brooks’ Sandwich House, is on the market. The Nichols Company, a real estate management firm, listed the 1-acre property at 2710 N. Brevard St. on Tuesday afternoon and erected a sign in the parking lot. “This is a great opportunity for a variety of development uses,” the listing reads, “including multifamily and mixed-use in an iconic Charlotte location currently operating as Brooks’ Sandwich House.”
Brooks’ is a beloved mainstay in NoDa, serving its signature chili cheeseburgers from a small red hut near the Matheson Avenue overpass since twin brothers Scott and David Brooks opened it in 1973. The cash-only business celebrated its 50th anniversary in June.
But Brooks’ has operated under reduced hours since Scott Brooks was shot and killed the morning of Dec. 9, 2019, as he was opening for the day. Two men await trial for his murder.
Update, 11/9/23: David Brooks has confirmed the sale of the property, which Mecklenburg County has assessed at about $2 million. “We’ve had a good run, and I’ve made some great friends and great connections,” Brooks told WCNC-TV on Wednesday, “and hopefully I’ve done some good in the community.” Brooks’ will remain open until the sale, he said; if his children keep the business going, it’ll be at a new location or possibly a food truck.
