WE’VE BEEN AT THIS BUSINESS of naming Charlotteans of the Year for nearly a decade, and we’re including people who not only made this city better in 2023 but matter far beyond the boundaries of the year. These are nine people and institutions that reflect a city transforming by the day: a group that pushes against the legislature’s rising anti-LGBTQ tide; restaurateurs who preserve properties as they expand their businesses, a rarity in this town; and our first posthumous COTY, a newspaper publisher and civic giant who, years ago, saw Charlotte’s potential like few others. They all helped shape this city, even as the shape relentlessly, endlessly shifts.
