MD Hyperbaric Charlotte owner Joe Sharpe.

Joe Sharpe first witnessed the power of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy as an athletic trainer in the NBA. Years ago, the former director of healthcare and sports performance for the Charlotte Hornets had a player enter treatment after a surgery, and the results, he says, were “astounding.” Now, Sharpe brings these medical-grade treatments to Charlotte with MD Hyperbaric Charlotte, opening Sept. 29 at 3535 Randolph Rd.

MD Hyperbaric is a state-of-the-art facility that Sharpe says serves Charlotteans of all ages and interests. Whether the patient’s a student athlete looking for enhanced recovery or mid-career Charlottean with chronic conditions, these sessions promote healing through increased oxygen delivery to tissues. And as opposed to non-medical wellness centers, MD Hyperbaric utilizes 7.5-foot, hardshell steel chambers for safer, more effective results. These sessions are most commonly called “dives,” a term referencing how the process simulates the experience of a deep-sea dive in a pressurized environment—albeit the most comfortable version of that activity.

Sharpe says that Charlotte, in particular, is an ideal region to offer HBOT treatments. “Wellness is a big key interest here in Charlotte,” Sharpe says, “The city’s full of active families and professionals who could use these services.”

As customers will vary in their needs, Sharpe’s team will offer tailored treatment plans. After working through an intake form, customers work with MD Hyperbaric Charlotte‘s staff and medical director to determine a path to rejuvenated health, with assessments of medical history and specific circumstances. Sessions typically last around an hour, with some conditions requiring up to 90 or 120 minutes. Immersion in 100% oxygen contributes to a slew of needs, including faster wound healing, reduced inflammation, stem cell activation, improved circulation, infection control, and enhanced cognitive function.

As someone who’s used these services, Sharpe has experienced the immediate feeling of “refreshment” after a session and says that he quickly noticed how his awareness and sleeping quality improved. And while there’s a misconception that these chambers might inspire claustrophobia, patients with those concerns note how “completely comfortable” these pods feel. Many customers simply take naps during their treatments.
