De-frost fun

The best ways to melt the drear off your icy week.
Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger

Hello, Charlotte! Assuming your driveway is no longer a skating rink this weekend, we’ve compiled a few great cultural events for warming your cold, probably claustrophobic soul. Have fun!

Billy Elliot

You’ve probably heard the buzz: this Tony-winning play based on the Oscar-winning movie will be in Charlotte at the Ovens Auditorium until January 30. It’s a fun, touching story, and we promise the accents in the stage version will be far easier to grasp than the ones in the movie. For more details, check out our Q & A with Rich Hebert, who plays Billy’s dad.

Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger

This whimsical, alternative duo (their sound reminds us almost exactly of Air) have garnered buzz since the release of their not hit, but soft-punch single "Jardin du Luxembourg." GOASTT is made up of Charlotte Kemp Muhl (a fashion model, by trade) and her boyfriend, Sean Lennon—the only son of John and Yoko. They’ll be crooning at the Evening Muse Thursday night.

Charlotte Symphony Orchestra: Robert Burns Night

When Mother Nature sends "sharp shivers thro the leafless bow’r" (to quote the man of the hour), it’s time to get inside with relaxing music and a few warm(ing) beverages. The CSO, with sponsorship from Highland Brewery and The Scottish Grocer, is hosting a Scottish festival as a prelude a program of Scottish tunes. You’ll hear Mendelssohn’s "Fingal’s Cave" from Hebrides Overture and "Scottish" from Symphony No. 3, as well as Bruch’s "Scottish Fantasy."
