News, notes, and gossip about the restaurant scene
New in the Neighborhood
The Deck on East (1514 East Blvd., 704-332- 9292), which opened in Dilworth in early March, features a rooftop deck as well as an extensive cocktail menu and dishes like guacamole, lobster rolls, and Alaskan snow crab legs, all served up by Chef Greg Guthrie. South Charlotte recently got a taste of EpiCentre’s popular Libretto’s Pizzeria when the New York-inspired Italian restaurant opened its second location in Ballantyne this spring (15205 John J. Delaney Dr., 704-714-1442).
Arriving in SouthPark
The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar (4310 Sharon Rd.) is opening this summer in SouthPark under Marcus Hall of eeZ Fusion & Sushi and Alan Springate of The Counter. The new restaurant, which will feature the unlikely match of sushi and burgers, will inhabit the current Counter space and the venue next door that housed The Grape. Also in SouthPark, San Antonio’s Modern Mexican (4331 Barclay Downs Dr.) is opening in the former Morton’s space. The new spot will feature upscale Mexican dishes like pork ribs, jalapeño shrimp, and seared salmon, as well as margaritas and a selection of premium tequila. For a more casual take on Mexican-inspired fare, Taco Mac, which will feature sandwiches, burgers, and more than 100 beers on tap in addition to tacos, will open this summer in Piedmont Town Center.
Charlotte can’t seem to get enough swanky Asian-inspired restaurants, and Kalu, which is projected to open in late April, is no exception. With Chef Bryan Emperor, who has worked at Nobu in Manhattan, and a two-story interior with two lounges, a sushi bar, and dramatic views of Time Warner Cable Arena, this new restaurant promises to cater to the trendy crowd. Kalu, which is in the 505 Building at the corner of Sixth and North Caldwell, will feature Japanese, Chinese, and Korean dishes.
