A Look Inside Tandur Indian Kitchen's Second Charlotte Location

The fast-casual Indian eatery expands to Rea Farms Village in South Charlotte

A second location of the fast-casual concept Tandur Indian Kitchen has opened in the Rea Farms Village shopping center in South Charlotte. The Knoxville, Tennessee-based restaurant opened their first location in Charlotte last April in SouthPark’s Morrison Shopping Center. (Read our interview last year about the concept here.)

Brothers H.P. and J.T. Patel founded Tandur because they wanted to offer authentic Indian dishes in an approachable setting. “We never want our guests to feel intimidated or overwhelmed by the experience as they may when dining at more traditional Indian restaurants for the first time,” H.P. says.

Tandur offers lunch, dinner, and carry-out. The menu includes favorites like spiced okra fries, Naanchos, and Tikka Masala, but the new location has eliminated more elaborate dishes to focus on their most popular items. Guests can also customize their order with the Saucey Entrées, which lets them to select a sauce and a protein with their choice of saffron basmati or brown rice and naan bread.

Also available are bottled Indian beers and local beers on tap from Charlotte breweries like Legion Brewing, Sycamore Brewery, Sugar Creek Brewing Company, Catawba Brewing Co., and Olde Mecklenburg Brewery, along with select wines. Non-alcoholic options include mint ginger lemonade and sparkling lemonade with rotating seasonal flavors and mango lassi (a traditional Indian yogurt-based drink). The kid’s menu has chicken kebabs, quesadillas, and Tikka Masala.

The 3,500-square-foot space in Rea Farms Village has large windows, Indian photographs, and Hindi script in rich colors that offer authentic touches of Indian culture. An exposed kitchen allows guests to see the Tanduri ovens—a traditional clay oven that can reach 900 degrees—and watch as the cooks roast meat and bake naan bread. At the entrance, custom spices are available for purchase. Guests can find recipes on the restaurant’s website and use the custom spices for at-home cooking.

Tandur Indian Kitchen is currently open at Rea Farms, with a grand opening scheduled for April 23. A portion of the day’s proceeds will go to South Charlotte Dog Rescue. Hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday.
