Doomsayers predicted development of the land along the southern edge of Mecklenburg County would be a bust, but a group of developers saw potential and now they are reaping the benefits. Built in the late 1990s, Ballantyne is a 2,000-acre planned community in south Charlotte. The pedestrian-friendly enclave includes exclusive shops and restaurants, open-air dining, entertainment, a futuristic movie theater with all the bells and whistles, two championship golf courses, a country club, a resort and spa, and a hefty amount of office space. There’s also housing - everything from multimillion-dollar executive homes to cottages, condominiums and apartments.
