Charlotte's Center City, which consists of Uptown and the city's four wards, has come full circle. In the past couple of years, people have begun flocking back to the heart of the city, thanks to the efforts of the city government, the nonprofit organization Center City Partners, and the opening of inviting restaurants, nightlife, entertainment and shopping. According to Center City Partners, nearly 12,000 people reside Uptown. And dozens more condominium and apartment complexes are under construction. First Ward is also undergoing a transformation with residential and commercial development under way. EpiCentre, a retail and entertainment complex, is planned for Second Ward; a professional baseball stadium is also in the works. Wachovia has ambitious plans for the already residential Third Ward. Finally, Fourth Ward is a lovely, cosmopolitan neighborhood with Victorian homes, upscale town houses and a newly constructed condominium high-rise.
