The annual CIAA Tournament is taking place in Charlotte for the sixth consecutive year, from February 28 to March 5. Even though there will be six days of college basketball going on at Time Warner Cable Arena, it’s all of the surrounding events and parties that create the most excitement and draw tens of thousands of visitors. Below is a list of those events from Monday, February 28 through Wednesday March 2. Please use the website listed for each event to verify information.

#Women’s CIAA Tournament Begins

CAABJ Annual Media Mixer
The Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists (CAABJ) invites media and communications professionals to take a break from deadlines, reporting, editing, and sweeps to mix and mingle. There will be free hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar. 7 p.m. Free admission. Cosmos Café (second floor), 300 N. College St.

Vanity7 at Seven
Ladies will receive mini-makeovers, giveaways, signatures cocktails and more, in preparation for CIAA Week. Presented by Vanity 7 Studio. 7 p.m. Apostrophe Lounge, 1440 S. Tryon St.

*Tone X & Friends Comedy Grand Opening Show at Lux
This popular, weekly comedy event is moving to a new venue. Features a live band along with music by DJ Stacey Blackman. Doors open at 7 p.m., seating at 8 p.m., showtime at 8:30 p.m. Lux (formerly Jillian’s), 200 E. Bland St.

Wednesday, March 2

Pop Life: Tournament Edition
It’s one of Charlotte’s most popular weekly social events, and this special installment will be wall-to-wall with additional visitors in town for the CIAA Tournament. It’s being held at a new, larger location. 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Free till 10:30 p.m.; $5 after. Phoenix at District 300 (formerly The Forum), 300 N. College St.

YES to Education Social
Sigmas of Charlotte are supporting the Youth Educational Society Inc., a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the ideals of leadership, citizenship, and academic excellence through mentoring programs and educational initiatives. 5 p.m. Free admission; donations accepted. Crave Dessert Bar, 500 W. Fifth St.

It’ll be a “visible” social scene at one of uptown’s newest bars. Meet Charlotte’s who’s who while enjoying live jazz followed by DJ Flemingo. Presented by Talk of the Town, Mayor Pro-Tem Patrick D. Cannon, and the National Black MBA Association Charlotte Chapter. 7 p.m.-midnight. A minimum $10 donation is requested in support of NBMBAA. WOK Bar, 127 N. Tryon St. (at Fifth and Tryon streets).

R-U-N-It-2-Win-It Day Party

Soul Stage Hosted by Rico Barrino
As seen on VH1’s Fantasia For Real, this night of live music will feature performances by Innertwyned and other artists. 8 p.m. $10 in advance. Allure Lounge, 1508 S. Mint St.

College Kickoff Party Hosted by Wale
The D.C. rapper and verse stealer on “No Hands” hosts this party. Music by DJ Youngun. Eighteen years of age and older to enter. 9 p.m.-2:30 a.m. Free till 9:30 p.m. with college ID; a limited number of $10 advance tickets available. Summit Ave Entertainment Complex, 935 S. Summit Ave.
