The annual CIAA Tournament is taking place in Charlotte for the sixth consecutive year, from February 28 to March 5. Even though there will be six days of college basketball going on at Time Warner Cable Arena, it’s all of the surrounding events and parties that create the most excitement and draw tens of thousands of visitors. Below is a list of those events for Thursday, March 3. Please use the website listed for each event to verify information.

#Official CIAA Tournament Event (put on by the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association)

#CIAA Career Expo
College students and graduates will have the opportunity to meet with graduate schools and prospective employers. 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Free. Charlotte Convention Center, 501 S. College St.

#CIAA Toyota Fan Experience
Events and activities for fans include car displays, video game and interactive zones, cooking exhibitions, and performances by national recording artists. 5-10 p.m. Free. Charlotte Convention Center, 501 S. College St.

#Men’s CIAA Tournament Quarterfinals

The ladies of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Rho Psi Omega chapter, present this annual party, known for its attractive crowd. Music by DJ Stacey Blackman. 9 p.m.-2 a.m. $35 in advance. Phoenix (formerly The Forum), 300 N. College St.

Rick Ross Live

Fire and Ice: The Best of Both Worlds
The Alphas of Charlotte and Deltas of Charlotte come together for this annual party, making it sort of one big college reunion. Music by DJ Flemingo. 10 p.m.-2 a.m. $25 in advance. Grand Central Events, 1000 Central Ave.

Funny First Thursday
Join host Kenny “FB Famous” Mack in welcoming BET veteran and star of HBO and Diddy’s Bad Boys of Comedy, Dave Martin. Opening act is comedian J-Bliss. Food will be available. Presented by Eddietainment and G.A.S.P. 8 p.m. $10 and up. Dixie Tavern, 301 E. Seventh St.

Extravaganza 2K11—Mystique Affair
Meet and greet with celebrity guests during this red carpet experience. Free hors d’oeuvres and free parking. Ages twenty-five and up preferred. Presented by Bridgeline Production. 9 p.m. $15 and up; first fifty ladies admitted free with flier (see website). Extravaganza Depot, 1610 N. Tryon St.

Charlotte Black Film Festival (March 3-5)
The CBFF will host three full days of festivities, films, and fun. It’s composed of film screenings, panel discussions, workshops, and the Vision Awards, which celebrate the work of African American filmmakers. See website for schedule and costs. Cookie Johnson Appearance and Fashion Show

Heaven @ Blue

The Tournament Warm Up

Cap Rates & Cocktails
This gathering for real estate professionals will feature a discussion on Charlotte’s current market with Joel Ford of the Charlotte Housing Authority. There will also be a tour of The VUE Charlotte luxury condos. Presented by African American Real Estate Professionals of N.C. 6 p.m. Free. The VUE Charlotte, 404 W. Fifth St.

An Evening with Chaka Khan and Friends
See the legendary soul singer perform live along with special guests. Doors open 6:30 p.m. $60 and up. The Blake Hotel, 555 S. McDowell St.

It’s an annual party put on by these popular promoters. Presented by BestFriendz, Dynasty 5, and Pinkies Up Productions. Music by DJ Skillz. 9 p.m. $20 and up. Whisky River, inside the EpiCentre, 210 E. Trade St.

Diverse Thursdays Second Annual Kickoff Block Party
They’re taking over the block in South End, from Dharma Lounge to Marigny, for four days. Thursday night kicks off with host Lance Gross and special guests 9th Wonder, Petey Wheatstraw, DJ XL, and DJ Shaun Nyce. Also features live go-go band Uptown Swagga. 9 p.m. $20 and up. Throwback Thursday at The Oasis
