Closet Shopping

If the recession has you strapped for cash but you're dying for a new party dress, you just might find what you're looking for in Effie Loukas's massive closet.

After years of lending clothes to family and friends, the Charlotte boutique owner is opening her personal collection to the public. Loukas is renting out everything from couture gowns to clubby tops, including clothes from her stores, Lotus and Civilian, as well as vintage and designer pieces, such as Diane von Furstenberg and Vera Wang. "You can rent a dress for forty or fifty bucks and you're done," she says.

A $900 Jovani Couture dress would rent for $75 for three days, for example, while a top might rent for $20. Renting out items is more common in high-end New York City stores or on Web sites like bagborroworsteal.com where a $1,150 Prada handbag rents for $150 a month to members. But Loukas also offers a personal touch, helping customers choose an outfit and matching accessories and shoes. To set up an appointment, contact Loukas at effie@lotuslook.com or 704-763-7969.
