Comida is Moving to Myers Park

Comida will close its Plaza Midwood location and combine with littleSpoon in Myers Park, Charlotte magazine has learned. Owner Alesha Stegemeyer (formerly Vanata) says Comida’s last day in the former Penguin location will be December 30.

Comida never quite gained a following in the neighborhood, with many people opting for lower-cost Mexican options such as Three Amigos or Sabor. Comida’s menu is ingredient-focused Latin fare, with local and organic produce, resulting in a price some diners view as too high for international cuisine. 

In addition, running a restaurant is becoming more and more difficult in a saturated city. littleSpoon is open only for breakfast and lunch, so moving Comida into that space will minimize the cost of operating both restaurants.

Comida and littleSpoon will operate with two separate staffs. Chef Ryan Allen will remain chef of littleSpoon, and Christina Bradshaw, the chef at Comida since earlier this year, will stay on for that concept. Rachel Sanderson in the evenings. In order to update the littleSpoon space to also fit the vibe of Comida, the Selwyn Avenue restaurant will close for a month of construction starting January 1.

The changes mean the littleSpoon will have a much broader cocktail program when it opens, as well as an updated interior—something it was due for anyway, Stegemeyer says.

Stegemeyer and her husband purchased the old Penguin building, and had it restored and renovated before opening Comida, preventing the space from becoming a chain. They’ll maintain ownership of the space and lease it out to another restaurant.
