Extra, Extra! Virgin Olive Oil

New shop focuses on top-notch olive oils
Taylor Mathis

Extra virgin olive oil is often touted as a vital component of the Mediterranean diet, and it was the oil’s health benefits—like lowering the risk of heart disease and cancer—that prompted Sandy Hofschneider, a retired nurse, to open The House of Olives in Birkdale Village (16620 Cranlyn Rd., Huntersville, 704-895-6950). But Hofschneider believes taste is just as important as healthfulness, and the proof is on the shelves. Single varietals from France, Spain, and Greece vary in flavor from fruity to peppery, alongside eleven flavored oils including Sundried Tomato and Parmesan Garlic, Smokin’ Chipotle, and Garlic Cilantro. There are sixteen white and dark balsamic vinegars to choose from, too—and plenty of crusty bread for dipping.
