Guide to Private Schools—2015

Charlotte has a variety of options for parents considering enrolling their children in private schools. From sports teams to 3-D technology to programs for students with special needs, each institution has its own strengths. With many school applications due in January, we hope this guide provides information that helps your family make an informed decision.

How We Did This

The information in this guide was provided by representatives of the schools who filled out a private, online survey. If a school is not included here, we could not track down the appropriate contact person or the school did not respond to our survey request.

If a question was not applicable to a certain school (such as the athletic conference for a school without varsity sports, for example), we omitted it. Other questions were omitted if schools chose not answer them or provided incomplete answers. Answers to the questions “What’s new?” and “What sets it apart?” were taken directly from the survey responses, with minor editing for space and clarity.

All but eight of the schools surveyed declined to disclose the percentage of their students who score 3 or higher on AP exams, so we eliminated that question from this list. Just 16 of the schools chose to share their annual teacher retention rate, and that number is included here.

More than half of the schools declined to provide demographic information about their students. However, for the 16 schools willing to specify the percentage of students who are nonwhite and the percentage who receive financial aid, you will find their answers here.

What’s new: One-to-one, single-platform technology devices have been issued to all students in grades K-12. The program involves incorporating a student-centered, constructivist, project-based learning model that leverages 21st-century productivity tools, digital content, curriculum, and learning management systems. A blended learning model combines the best of online learning with the best of face-to-face instruction. The technology program is designed to enhance instruction through the use of technology in the classroom, complementing the tried-and-true techniques of Fletcher’s program, such as multisensory instruction, diagnostic-prescriptive teaching, and use of the Orton-Gillingham approach.
What sets it apart: The Fletcher School offers a comprehensive educational program designed to build the academic, social, and emotional competence of students with specific learning disabilities and/or ADHD. We offer a college-preparatory curriculum that prepares students to mainstream into elementary, secondary, and postsecondary academic environments. Our bright, talented, and often gifted students learn in small, structured classes with a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio. Utilizing the Orton-Gillingham approach to teaching, instruction is sequential, cumulative, and repetitious in order for students to achieve mastery. Individual and prescriptive plans of instruction are developed for each student. Multisensory learning techniques are employed, and school-issued, 1:1 Apple devices support 21st-century learning and enhance students’ organizational skills.

Lower school and middle school students partner with local organizations, many within walking distance from our uptown campus, whose mission and services are related to curricular goals. Our students address real community needs in ways that are connected to and informed by their classroom learning. Yearlong partnerships create the possibility of relationship formation that transforms charity into mutual service among neighbors.
