If you are in the Plaza Midwood area and are looking for an alternative to the common pizza joint, drop in to Intermezzo. Located at Tenth and Central, Intermezzo offers excellent pizza from a wood-burning oven. Try the Fungi (mushrooms) or the loaded Carbonara; there are ten selections in all, available in two sizes for $10.50 to $17.50.

Most intriguing about this funky little joint are the traditional Slavic selections. There is piroska (pictured, below), a delicious piped puff pastry stuffed with ham, mushrooms, and mozzarella. Also, try the toothsome kebabs or cevapi (chu-VAP-ee): skewers of chicken, beef, lamb, or veggies grilled and served with a creamy cucumber sauce similar to Greek tzatziki.

The space is as rustic as the cuisine: exposed brick, wood beams, and a cozy little bar with a great selection of beer and wine. When the weather cooperates, al fresco dining is available with café tables and chairs that offer a prime gander at the Charlotte skyline.
